Sounds like either overheating or the ScreenSaver/power options.

If it's happening when you're working, I'd lean towards overheating. If it happens after a period of inactivity, it would probably be a setting needing changed in the power options. Let us know.

Computers shutting down perfectly normal in most cases. Can you provide some details? When is it shutting down, make, model, operating system, how long has it been happening, what are you doing when it shuts down?

Is the battery fully charged ? Check you Power Settings under Control Panel. Some of these default to 15mins by default. If you don't desire this behavior set them to never and apply them.

Lately, my laptop (Winbook) has been overheating and shutting down. Any ideas?

3 possible causes for this:
  1. Bad Power Supply....heating up and shutting down
  2. Bad Motherboard...heats up and freezes
  3. Bad Heatsink/processor....fan/heatsink no longer keeping processor cool enough to operate shutting your machine down
If when the laptop overheats, it just shuts down and doesn't freeze or lock up, it's most likely the Power Supply. If it just freezes/locks up, its much more likely that the problem lies with the motherboard. Hope this helps with your laptop problem. Best of luck.

I cannot shut down or restart my PC using the start menu prompts. The only way to shut her down is a hard shut down (manually turn her off).

There is a program that is failing to shut down in general, which is delaying the computers ability to shut down.
The next time you shut down, make sure you have no programs open. Then, while attempting to shut down, wait until Windows pops up window asking you to close a non-responsive program. When it does, take note of the program that it mentions, then close it and see if Windows shuts down. Note: sometimes this takes a really long time.
Try re-installing the non-responsive program and see if your computer can shut down normally again.

My laptop won't shut down properly!

Is it possible that you have changed the settings of what buttons do what on your system? E.g. you could have changed the power button to "switch user" instead of "shut down", to check this (in XP) go to "Power Options" (in Control Panel" and then click on the "Advanced tab" at the top, then select "Shut down" from the drop down menu at the bottom of the window.

If this is already set to shut down then maybe you could do a system restore in case another setting has been changed, restore it to before the PC started doing this.

Alternatively try actually choosing "Turn off Computer" from the Log On screen (press Ctrl + L to get to this screen, or choose switch user/log off). If you are using Vista I beleive that there is a shut-down option from the Log In Page there (which again you can access by pressing Ctrl + L on the keyboard.

Hope this helps!

On shutting down my laptop it gave the message, "installing 1 of 1" do not turn off your computer. It did not turn off all night. I turned it off by using the on/off button then shut it down...

When you start your laptop, press F8. You will get a menu (Normal boot, Reboot...). Choose Last good known configuration (something like that).

Hi, my satellite pro laptop is powered up. I can not shut it off.

If the laptop does not shut down if you go to Shut Down, you can try pressing the power button and see if it shuts down, if not, hold the power button down for 5 seconds and it will power off.
