SOURCE: black soot on glass and black smoke comes out

Remove the burner and clean all holes ,typically at the end of the burner is a cheep sheet metal valve. This valve adjusts the air to gas mixture by rotating it to increase or decrease the combustible air intake.Air must be sucked into the burner as natural gas is injected into it, this makes for a clean flame,The flame should be blue with small yellow tips.If the flame is long and yellow and sooty increase the air intake on the burner valve.

I have mislaid the instructions for my Genesis Miami gas fire, and need to relay the ceramic logs. can anyone please help?

This will depend on whether the fireplace is vented or is vent-free. Vent-free gas fireplaces are sold as a kit with the valve, burner, media (logs, glass, shapes, etc) all designed for a particular placement to work together to reduce dangerous chemicals. A vent-free burner and valve cannot have the logs removed and replaced with some other type of ceramic gas log because the exact placement of the logs is designed around the ports in the burner where the flames rise to minimize carbon created from the flames touching the logs.

If your fireplace is vented then the pull of the flue will remove dangerous fumes created by the same placement so there are no rules about re-arranging or replacing "media". If the fireplace is vented then you could use other log-placement-guides to identify the type of log and where it belongs with little worry because vented logs are designed to be able to have some adjustment anyway.

If vent-free and without a manual, an educated technician should do this for you because the BTU setting on the valve must be compared to the types of burners, port placement, size of ports, amount of ports and flame height. After this examination, someone familiar with the various hidden "tongue-and-groove" etchings in different types of gas logs can figure-out where to place the logs. They may have to test the fireplace burning once or twice to get it exactly correct but once you understand the idea of how a vent-free gas log diminishes the carbon-output of the amount of gas flowing through the burners then it is only a matter of watching the flames to see where the logs could be and comparing the size and layout of the logs to find the best fit.

Napoleon Fireplace propane Pilot won't light main burner even though gas flows in?

  • I'm going to assume your fireplace has a pilot light.
  • Follow the little holes in the burner that lead to the pilot light.
  • Make sure the pilot flame is pointing directly at the closest burner hole. (adjust if necessary).
  • Often, you will need to sprinkle a layer of "glowing embers" in this area. The embers will help the gas travel to the pilot light and ignite.
  • Always start your propane appliance on "High" never "Low". Cold propane likes to drop to the bottom of the firebox and accumulate until it reaches the pilot (this is called delayed ignition). Keeping it on "high" will help the fuel travel over to the pilot without buildup.

Napolean fireplace burner wont light

If your pilot is running fine, but your burner will not light:
  • You may have a bad thermopile.
  • There may be blockage in the burner orifice.
You can test the voltage of the thermopile per your owner's manual (replace if necessary).
You can clean out the burner orifice with some compressed air.

Gas fireplace lights up but only half the burner stays on after running for a few minutes

Do not operate this fireplace until problem is solved.

Could be low gas pressure, or dirty combustion parts, or bad gas control valve.
Contact gas company immediately for specialist in area.

If burner is dirty and clogged, then unburned, explosive gas can be going up the flueway. This is a dangerous condition that needs to be addressed before putting fireplace back into service.

Web-search your specific brand and model number, and include .pdf in search parameter for possible downloadable product manual.
Read product manual for advisories and maintenance and troubleshoot and warranty.

Will not light

Have you removed the burners covers and top to see if the PILOT LIGHTS may have blown out? Hold a stick match or fireplace match (long stick) down in the area of the circular burner after turning on some gas. The burner should light and the pilot light should stay on as well. You local gas company provides service for this type of problem. Call them and have a gas company representative make a home call (free service) in most areas.

Gas logs while turned on seem to fade, nearly go

you must keep the burner and the pilot light area clean and free of dust also, the area where your burner gets air most of the time it has an adjustment to give it more or less air.I have had my dyna glo vent free model for 8 years.A good cleaning in late fall with low pressure air and 1 or 2 times through the winter depending on conditions of use.

Kenmore Elite 17680 gas grill needs a new burner. I purchased the burner, but do not know how to install it. Can this be done as "do it yourself" or does it require a serviceman?

I had a local barbeque grill retailer ( a fireplace and barbeque store which did repairs) install a new one for me. I didn't want to mess with the venturi tubes and the exact length of the openings so it would work. I am glad I did as it works perfectly.
