Tascam DA-30 ejects only some tapes

Hello, I'm trying to transfer some old DAT tapes to my computer. For some odd reason, the machine automatically ejects some of the tapes, but now all of them. It doesn't seem to be a brand issue or whether or not the plastic safety is closed or open. It is very random. Any ideas? Thanks

SOURCE: how do i transfer from tascam DA-30MK11 to computer

From my personal experience, and assuming that you want to do this purely in digital format in order to preserve quality, you need to connect an RCA cable from the digital (SP/DIF) output of the DAT machine to an SP/DIF input of a sound card installed into your computer. Please note that the sound card on your computer must have digital input capability. Also the Digital input (sometimes labeled ‘CD digital’) must be selected in your software as part of the recording controls. To do this, open Volume Control, click ‘Options’, select ‘Properties’ and then select ‘Recording’ (as ‘Playback’ is usually enabled as default), and select the ‘digital’ input. Then using a reasonably good a sound editor or other recording software, start recording keeping in mind that you should configure the software to accept whatever audio data format is used on the DAT tape (i.e. 16 bits, 44.1KHz, or 48 KHz etc) I’m my case the software usually displays a box with these parameters before starting to record. Hope This helps. Good luck!

SOURCE: TASCAM DA-30 tape transport error

When you use any cleaner or lubricant it must be only for the moving part and must never stray into the transport section. Also what is required if there is any frictio is to dry wipe and set. Now when you lubricant got sprread into the head, the oil will act as a great adhesive at higher speed and got the tape entagled. So please wipe dry all the oil of the headd and do nto damage the head with the wipe touching the delicate ferrite heads in the slot, DO NOT TOUCH THIS SECTION but with an even paper with soft brushes. Now check you reel drive and see if there is dirrt lodged in clean and reset., put the set on for regaining lost values as many electronics capacitors may have lost value by drying. If the tape up does not move it is a mechanical problem and you must check for the drive and the friction wheel. If however the reel works and the count does not happen and you get the error , then your reel sensor is faulty. Check these points and confirm, Hope this advice helps, Good day.

SOURCE: where can I get tapes

You need what are called "DAT TAPES". Just like Blank analogue audio cassettes they come in a range of lengths fro 15min to 180min. You'd be better off to use something like a 60 or 90min IMHO. Dat tapes can be purchased from places like "studio spares" or any other PRO media supplier. They can be quite pricey. I tend to buy mine in bulk on ebay.
Before you ask, not there are not different tapes for different machines, but the btands do vary. I use either HHB or AMPEX. DO NOT USE COMEPUTER DATA BACK UP CARTRIDGES as a cheap alternataive.....they are different and end up giving you a lot of loss and errors over the years...sometimes instantly (Tale it from experience!)

How do I fix a Tascam DA-30 DAT Recorder?

It needs cleaning and new belts some of which are very hard to find because they are smaller than a dime. It can be fixed if the Pinch Roller is not cracked.

My TASCAM DA-20 Mk II DAT doesn't play back any of my tapes. It still appears to record OK, but there is no level meter or sound or track finding when playing back, though the tape seems to be run

Hi Julian,
There is a lot that can go wrong with these miniature helical scan systems. When I had units like that I packed them off to Russ at New Jersey Factory Service and they were restored. I am not sure about parts like drums at this point but Russ is your best chance to get it working again. He has corrected CDRW and DAT as well as just about anything Tascam makes and he even fixed some Sony units too. I know him as the counterpart to the Chicago Factory Service facility when it was open. He was the Manager in New Jersey then.

Hi, My TASCAM DA-20 mkII DAT recorder is holding onto a tape. It will play the tape and there are no error messages, but the tape will not eject. How do I get the tape out without breaking the DAT...

A Technician usually has to get a tape out of a machine when this happens. In radio when I was Chief Engineer for several stations in Chicago I would send my defective decks to Russ at New Jersey Factory Service in Emerson NJ. He knows how to fix these units.

Tape drive is not identified in the show device command on Open VMS platform. Tapes can be insertedbut cannot be ejected. Tapes seems to be rewinding, but doesnot wind.

Try to press and hold the eject button for 30 seconds.
If issue persists try to reflash the frimware revision with HP diagnostic tool LTT.

Many different things could sause a problem, belts, mode switch, capacitors in capstan or head motor drive circuit. Hard to say what exactly is wrong with the machine without looking at it.

The DAT machine needs new belts and maybe some cleaning. These fail all the time due to old belts that lose the tension that is required.

Da 38 8 track audio

This is a nice DAT recorder for its time. This unit uses a drive gear system for the FF, RR and the take up reels. Try the ff and rr, if they work, I am quessing there is a bad take up idler clutch assembly.l If the ff and rr does not work, the drive belt(s) are most likely bad. Good Luck
