Well...buying a new router might not fix the problem if you can't find the cause for it.
Blueextc is right that the signal could be weak or interrupted. (Just on a side note: he is wrong about the frequencies. 802.11b and 802.11g use the 2.4 GHz ISM band, 802.11a uses the 5 GHz U-NII band, and 802.11n transmit at a frequency of 2.4GHz or 5 GHz)
Therefore, sometimes a wireless telephone, if placed too closed to the router, can cause interferece, because it is also working in the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Microwave, cabling in the wall - all reasons for bad reception.

So just buying a new router might not solve the problem.

Upgrading the firmware or - even better - changing to something like tomato, can solve a lot of issues. If you need assistance with the procedures, come back here and I am happy to help.

You may have a signal-path problem or interference - not necessarily from your house.

The "g" speed routers work on the 900MHz frequency bandwidth.
Newer "n" routers are backward compatible, and use the much faster and reliable 2.4GHz. The wavelengths are significantly closer together, and outside interference is almost none.

In part he is right - getting a new router "N" will eliminate your connectivity problems.

It could also be a bad wall plug power supply, depending on your budget, find a replacement power supply or just buy a new router with potentially the same problem.

Linksys WRT54G: Has worked great for years. It recently reset itself (lost encryption). At same time: wireless works for about 60 secs then disconnect; then next day, wireless works perfect. Then:...

if it is working but intermittently most probably you may need to update your routers firmware online... go into your routers GUI " Graphical User Interface settigns page there should be an option for you to update the routers firmware... also try calling the routers manufacturer give them what model your router is for them to check and give you info if there are updates available for the specific router you have. if it connects it is ok it it gives an error something is incorrect in the settings.

Im hooking everything up right as im going through the 4 step intallation disk and it says Your new router does not appear to be connected properly.

make sure the cable going from your laptop/computer is connected - you NEED to be connected! or if you are going wireless and you know that your laptop wireless adapter is working and you can see the default wireless network - which is "linksys" (without the quotes) you should be able to connect to it and configure it without the CD..

Laptop could not detect linksys on second day

Jatman,

Couple of things you can try here:

1) Connect your laptop (or another computer if possible) to the router using a network cable. You should then be able to see your configuration info. Make sure that the computer you are using to connect (wired) to the router is set up to use DHCP. Once in there, depending on what you find, you might be able to fix it yourself.

2) Factory reset the router and go through the setup options as if it were brand new.

Hope this helps.
