Sorry, I used the wrong terms, its the laptop screen itself. Thanks though.

  • thomvoth Jan 11, 2009

K I just tried it on my TV and its doing the same thing, so the video card must be the issue.

  • thomvoth Jan 11, 2009

Did that already, that was my first though too. It is doing it on its own screen and also through the VGA port. I will see if I can update the video drivers.

Since the cable isn't the culprit as you determined by moving the cable around. This leads the problem to be either the video card (built in or not) in your PC or the monitor itself. The best way to test this is to switch your monitor with someone else and see which one duplicates the problem. If the monitor is the problem, the good news is that you can find them on sale for cheap online. I found a 19" for $99.99 and am quite happy with it.
The only other thing I'd suggest is updating the drivers for the monitor through Device Manager (right click My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager). Expand Monitors and Display Adapters. Right click what is displayed and choose Update Driver. This most likely won't be the problem fixer but is worth checking out.
Last question...how old is the monitor ?

You can go to support.dell.com and look up the manual for your laptop. It will show you how to take off the monitor. There is a good chance one of the cables needs reseated. It's a relatively painless procedure if you're even a little handy with tools.

The flickering problem you have is caused by the monitor's t-con board, The Altera chip on the T-con board is having a bad connection because of dead soldering points or cracked soldering joints, the solution for this problem is to have the T-con board Altera chip reballed, its a very advanced repair , only one place will fix it for you and I will add a link for it, you won't easily find a replacement T-con board for this monitor and Samsung is no longer supporting your monitor so that place is your only hope. 7f514c27-5c9c-4e70-b50a-29505054d67b.jpg b5ec5af6-395e-4533-b5ea-9ca10c5ae592.jpg SAMSUNG MONITOR 305T REBALLING REPAIR 728a6cd3-2218-4f75-8f0c-7348e47d15f4.jpg

Dell Inspiron 4100 flickering off and on Makes it extremily hard to work with . How can I tell whether it is the display or something else?

What happens when you hook it up to a external monitor? If it works fine with a external monitor, then your laptop monitor is going bad. If it does it with an external monitor, then its more than likely an issue with your laptops video adapter.

Laptop monitor flickering

You could have a faulty ribbon video cable or a loose video connection to the motherboard. Reseat the video cable connection to the motherboard.
To get to this connector you most likely need to remove the keyboard to get access to this connector.

Monitor flickers, similar to a fluorescent light bulb that is going out. Also, there is one line on the left side of the screen, going up and down, that changes color, but it comes and goes. I thought...

The problem is in the monitor screen, there is a large circuit board connected behind the main display screen. The video signal is feed to the main board and generates the proper color balance, the second problem is the lamp behind the display is flickering and breaking down. To repair this will not be cost effective, cheaper to replace the monitor. But I would suggest hooking a spare monitor to the computer to make sure there are no additional issues.

Flickering

Hello,

If the screen of your monitor is flickering, this is indicating that your picture board is about to go bad or already bad, but i would suggest you replace the cable that connect to the monitor before concluding on this, if after replacing the cable, problem still persist, you will need to replace the picture board on the monitor to solve the problem.

Take care.

Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop screen will not work.

If you hear the hard drive spinning and you think Windows is working but you can't see an image then :-
You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :-
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Display blinks rapidly

Yea if possible try to check if the monitor cable that is connecting the monitor to the motherboard on he laptop is lose. Then give your laptop's video card drivers an update. If that doesn't help then it could be something physical wrong with the video card. Or something physical wrong with the monitor controller board. You'll just have to isolate the problem to find the reason for the issue.
