SOURCE: after replacing gasket on filter vacumed pool

I would suspect that there is a fault in the filter, a bnreak in the filter elements, a bad alignment, a colapsed support. something that is letting the dirt get back in to the pool

SOURCE: while vacuuming my pool, valve

Hi, my name is John I will do my best to assist you.

Normally the valve head on these sand filters has a selection for "Pump To Waste" this is the setting that should be used when vacuuming. The pump water will flow out the backwash hose/line so that the contaminated water does not flow through the filter and back into the pool.

A lot of water is pumped out using this process, so it's a good idea to have a water hose refilling the pool while you work. Unless you can work quickly you may not be able to completely clean the entire pool at one time. Pay attention to the water level, and when it drops to the low level mark on the skimmer stop and wat for it to refill.

The "Filter" selection is typically intended for normal pump circulation only.

SOURCE: I have a hayward SP714

Sand filters have a screen at the bottom. This screen keeps the sand from getting out because it has slits or holes that are smaller than the size of the sand grain. The slits are large enough for the water to pass. If the material breaks there are areas that are large enough to allow the sand to pass and this won't stop until you replace the strainer elements.
In order to do this, you must remove the sand, remove and inspect the strainer and replace the sand.
Bring your model to a local pool supplier, confirm what I am saying, make sure they have the necessary parts and go from there.

SOURCE: While vacuuming my swimming pool

Try changing the setting on your pool filters control valve to waste. This will bypass the filter and vacuum directly to waste. If this works, it could be a problem with the filter's "filter" setting and you may need to service or replace your control valve.

Hayward pool filter Model SP711 alignment on filter, ports, spider gasket replacement

Remove the 6 screws from around the valve assembly. Pay close attention to the current orientation of the valve assembly before removing. Lift the value assembly straight out and the spider gasket is on the bottom. This could be twisted a little which would also cause your back flush port to leak when positioned in the filter position. If twisted, just position back in alignment with the valve holes on the bottom of the valve assembly. If the gasket is worn or torn then just replace and place the valve assembly back in the valve housing and replace all 6 screws. If you still have problems with water not functioning based on the way you have the handle turned then it might be time to replace the entire valve assembly.

Is there another solution to fixing the spider gasket on my heyward filter other that replacing the whole valve assembly? Are there any home remedies out there.

I would try to change the gasket first ... be sure you look at the gasket BEFORE you remove it so you can put the new one in properly. Typically, it is the gasket that goes and not the valve. Remember, you can only turn the handle in a clock wise direction - never backward. or is that counter clock wise ... :-)

I don't like sand filters very much but that still should not be happening. If you have a multiport valve on your filter, take it apart and see if the spider gasket is in good condition and if it's secure. Sometimes if a spider gasket swells it can push its way out of the grooves where it is fastened. Also, if you have ever turned the multiport selector know without fully depressing it, if could have pulled a part of the gasket out and it's now letting water return to the pool without being filtered at all.

New sand should not be causing this problem, check your multiport and see if that is the problem.

Hope this helps

I have a brand new leaking lots of water from my backwash when on my filter setting

Your multiport spider gasket is bad. Just replace it by removing the top assembly. Remove the 6 phillips screws on the valve cover and the whole assembly will come off. This is easiest done when the valve is first put on the "Winter" position

What is the spider gasket?

A spider gasket is used in a multi-port valve on a pool filter. It is the thing that is damaged if you run the valve arm in a counter clock-wise direction.

Sand is being pumped into the pool

This usually indicates a broken spider gasket in the top valve. Your local pool dealer should have a replacement. it is simple to change, just remove the screws at the top of the valve around the flange and the spider gasket shoud be visible. Take to the dealer and get it replaced.

One of two things can cause this. Either the spider gasket is bad or there is a rip or tear in one or more of the filter grids.

My filter and pump will not retain the prime after turning off. Its a pantera sand filter. I can hear an air hissing sound coming from the multi valve port

Either you have a bad spider gasket inside the multiport valve or a bad threaded fitting going into it. Check for leaks around the multiport and backwash line. You'll have to take apart the multiport valve to make sure the spider gasket is not damaged or out of place. Make sure to install the multiport valve in the same position. You can get a replacement gasket at most pool supply stores or online.
