I have windows xp professional 2002, service pack 2 and the sound and sound icon disappeared

Sounds like either the hardware has become disabled or you lost your audio driver. To check this Right click the "My Computer" icon and select "Manage" A Computer Management window will come on the left hand side select device manager. This pulls up a list of every piece of hardware in your computer. If anything has a yellow " ! " next to it then the computer sees the hardware but can not run it due to an incorrect or missing driver. If there is a red " X " next to it then it has been disabled. To re-enable a component right click the icon and select enable. Finding the correct driver may be difficult, if you bought the computer from a store try going to the manufactures website. Go to Drivers/Support, usually you can type in the Model or Serial number of your computer and pull up every driver you may need.

Sound card driver has not found

Firstly just try and reboot your system, sometimes the soundcard become corrupted with shared files. If this fails then go to microsoft support and search for the driver of the soundcard nominated in your device manager. I had this problem for a while and had to keep rebooting the system, then it suddenly fixed itself, probably created by a windows update.

My desktop keeps disappearing

Hi!

Remove unnecessary programs installed on your computer. This will help you save space and then more room for special processes for system performance.

Next, I advise you to run a full computer scan. This will help eliminate viruses or spywares on your PC and I think which is also the culprit to your Desktop suddenly dissapearing. Viruses are nasty and they will do everything to bug your computer down.
