1st timer stopped working. replaced with exact same model and it does the same thing (only comes on via switch, not keeping time) I bought the replacement new but from a guy with surplus stuff on Ebay so I guess it\'s possible the new one was too.

  • pete Dec 04, 2012

Original was wire by an electrician so I know it was done right. I think I had a power surge that blew out the timer on the original. Could it have damaged the wire that controls the timer without causing damage to the wire that switches the light on/off? Is so, how do I check for this?

Usually if lights turn on, and you do not detect burned smell at switch box, or feel overheating at switch box, then wires are ok. Best way to confirm this is visual inspection of wires for melted insulation. I do not suggest buying timers on ebay since used, obsolete, non-functioning timers would tend to show up for sale on that site. Same with surplus dealers. Advantage of E1010 timer is that it is genuinely heavy-duty 15 amps, but costs $42 on Amazon. Disadvantage of new E1010 is the newer cheaper design has 2 non-replaceable trippers. For replacement timer, I recommend GE 15070 from local home depot, so if timer goes defective you can buy new timer and take defective one back in new package.http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers... GE 15070 timer wires same as E1010. I use the GE 15070 to control a contactor that tuns my water heater on-off.

Hey Gene, Thanks for all the great info. Here's the end of the story as of 5 minutes ago when the new timer I bought from the local hardware store clicked on!!! The one I bought on ebay was garbage and didn't work (I can get a refund)... Again, thanks

Is this new timer installation, or older timer that stopped functioning?

1) Copy following link to help identify timer, download manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html#E1020

2) If this is new installation, then check wiring for single pole installation. This timer will not work for 3-way switching.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-timers.html

3) If timer worked before, and now clock motor has stopped working:
Turn power off, use compressed air to blow out timer, then see if you can spray highly flammable vapor from WD40 can into the motor.gears.

4) There are replacement trippers for this timer, but no replacement clock motors.
Buy another single-pole in-wall timer.

SOURCE: my rain tight intermatic outdoor timer no longer switches contact

the way the message reads the timer was working and then quit. most likely the contacts or clock motor has wore out. but by u sayiing u can't get power manually i would say the contacts or relay that switches the load is bad.

i would try to buy a timer that was the same and put the guts in the old box if its alot of trouble to change out.

one other thing u can check, is the timer getting its operating power from the circuit or is the something else controlling the timer. if there is something else controlling the timer, i would check that to see if i had power there.

SOURCE: Trying to replace Intermatic with Utilitech inwall

The wires on your new switch are intended for black = power .. white = neutral . and red = lights .. with two black wires on the old switch I am assuming that there is a bundle of white wires in that wall box, the white timer needs to join that bundle ... then you need to determine which black wire is the power from the electrical panel ( voltage tester) and connect to the black timer wire .. the red timer wire connects to the other black wire in the wall..

Thermal Fuse If the dishwasher won't start the thermal fuse might have blown. The thermal fuse helps to prevent damage to the dishwasher by turning off power so that it doesn't overheat. Once blown, the thermal fuse will have to be replaced for the dishwasher to work.

Door Switch The door switch, or switches, are sometimes called interlock switches. The door switch prevents the dishwasher from running while the door is open. If the dishwasher won't start, the switch or switches might be defective. To access the door switches, remove the control panel or inside door panel - depending on the model. They can be tested for continuity.

Main Control Board The main control board provides power to nearly every component of the dishwasher. If the dishwasher won't start the main control board might be defective. YOU should first check for more common parts. Many times control boards are replaced unnecessarily because the problem was not diagnosed properly.

Touchpad and Control Panel If the touchpad is defective, the control board might not get the signal for the selections made. If the dishwasher won't start and the display doesn't seem to change properly when the buttons are pressed, the touchpad might need to be replaced. On some models the touchpad and control panel are sold together and will need to be replaced at the same time.

Touchpad If the touchpad is defective, the control board might not get the signal for the selections made. If the dishwasher won't start and the display doesn't seem to change properly when the buttons are pressed, the touchpad might need to be replaced.

Timer The timer allows power to flow to the proper parts at the proper times. If the dishwasher won't start, the timer might be defective. Keep in mind that timers are often misdiagnosed as the cause of a problem. Check other components first before replacing the timer.

1) You performed correct troubleshoot steps down the line.
Last thing would be to install defect timer on another light circuit in house, and see if problem is the timer or wire going to coach lights.

2) EJ351C has 1 year limited warranty.
Buy new EJ351c and install single pole light switch until timer replacement is available.
Timer has easy 2-wire installation. Turn off power. Connect new timer just like old one was connected. Either timer black wire connects to either wire in switch box.
