SOURCE: Need instructions for T.R.A.C. dial hot water

I thought I knew every water heater timer possible.

Never heard of T.R.A.C.
Is that a European timer?

Here's what to do. Set the pins one direction or the other. Start with cool water in tank, so it will turn on for sure when power is applied. Turn on power. Put your ear against water heater. Listen for bubbly-fizzing sound that tells you water heater is on.

Check label on side of tank to see voltage & wattage of tank. Watt rating for dual element tanks is same as element wattage, since only one element is ON at a time. Generally, 240V electric tanks are 3500, 4500, and 5500 watts. That is 16 amps, 21 amps and 23 amps. Make sure your timer has amp rating to match water heater.

Open following link for Utilitec timer manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Program-wire-Utilitec-LW60418.html

This timer should have a back-up capacitor so that programming is kept in memory during power outage.
Power outage is known cause of timer failure. When power turns on, the surge knocks out electronics.
People writing to fixya report electronic timers and electronic water heater controls stop working after power outage. Probably many other electronic devices are affected too, but that would be out of my specialty.
Troubleshoot says 'in case of operational failure, press reset button to clear all settings and restart.'
If timer has failed, buy another from Lowes and return defect in new package.

My limited research indicates this heater is designed for USA electrical systems. That would mean single phase, 240/208 volts, 60 Hz. The drawings I reviewed shows a 2 pole, 240 volt breaker feeding each heating circuit. That means no "neutral wire" goes to the heater and therefore no 120 volts is needed. This is good. Kenya's system is single phase, 240 volts, 50 Hz. The heater should work reasonably well on the African system. Connect the power just like you would in the US.

Nope it is only rated for 120 volts

You would need a Paragon timer that would be rated for 240 volts

Can you use a plug in timer to switch your storage heater on during the cheap rate electricity

Generally NO.
But...it Depends on amp rating of timer, wattage of water heater, and line voltage.
Look at label on side of heater for watts.
Electric water heater will work on any voltage.

1) Start with 120 Volt outlet::
Volts x amps = watts
Watts divided by volts = amps
Let's say outlet is 120Volts. Lets say water heater is rated 4500 watts.
4500 divided by 120 = 37 amps
There is NO plug-in timer rated for 37 amps.

Let's say water heater is rated 900 watts.
900 divided by 120 volts = 7.5 amps

Yes. The Intermatic HB113 timer will handle up to 8 amps.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html#appliance

2) 240 Volt outlet
Same calculations as above.

1900 watt element divided by 240 volts = 8 amp.
Yes, the Intermatic HB112 timer will safely handle that element.

Hi experts! I've moved into a new Flat but there wasn't a manual left for the immersion heater timer. At the moment I'm leaving it on all the time which no doubt will start to cost more money than...

Mikey Mike, I think I may have found a link that you can find the Owners Manual you're looking for. You'll need to pick one that looks like yours (since you don't have a model #), click on it and after it takes you to another page, browser back and look at the top right corner and you'll see a highlighted technical link. Click on it and it will take you to the Owners Manual for that particular model.

By the way, your timer is manufactured under the name TRAC Immersion timer.

I hope this helps, because finding things in the UK ain't easy, for this good ol' boy from the US. If does, please leave me a good rating. Thanks!
