Kohler Whirlpool tub motor wont turn on

During the recent ice storm we had various electrical issues such as all our controls on our furnace were blown, phones had to be replaced, toaster oven died, fish tank controls all died. We believe we had power surges. I just recently found that my whirlpool tub (less than 1 yr old) won't start. Do you have any quick check homeowner ideas before having the whole thing dismantaled and replaced. I was reading about some reset switch in the instruction manual, but don't see any button on the pump so I'm thinking that may be beyond me. I'm really hoping I don't have to replace the whole pump given the cost in the first place.

I don't know if it helps but, we had power surges and it took out alot of things in my home. My whirlpool motor in my tub quit working and I took a panel off, looked for a reset switch, could not find one. So I checked the power going to the motor with a lamp, and it didn't work. I don't know why, but I tried another switch in my bathroom and the lamp didn't work so I reset the GFCI on that plug and the lamp came on. I ran back to the tub, with my lamp, plugged it into the plug and it worked. I have 2 other plugs in my bathroom that have been working fine, I had no idea that the tub and the unused plug by the bath door were on the same circuit.

So reset all your GFCI's in the bath, make sure they are all working and plug that motor up.

I sure hope that was the only problem so you can get your money back.

We had the same thing happen to our Aker brand whirlpool tub.  The fix was a replacement timer/control piece which is connected by two wires to the pump behind the tub (access wall) and plugged into the outlet; however, this cost $150 for the part and $85 for the service call (all he did was take the part out and ship me the replacement part which was easy to do).  Problem I have now is that the motor won't shut off unless I unplug it.  I am waiting for a call back from the repairman who sent me the part.

Kohler whirlpool type tub will not pump water out of its jets or take water into the intake. Pump appears to operate fine. Water does not want to move. Suggestions?

When a bath pump turns on but does not move any water it is usually because there is an Air Lock and needs to be released.Try this.
  • Fill the tub with water
  • Turn the pump on
  • Unthread the discharge pump union until water starts to squirt out
  • when this happens you should hear a big 'swoosh'

if the bath pump starts to discharge water through the jets then you have solved the problem.

Whirlpool does not turn on. Kohler Model K-1474-V

The chances that is problem you are experiencing is related to the suction cover is extremely remote. The suction assembly doesn't have anything to do with the tub motor operating.
The issue is most likely with the motor not working or the air switch in the motor malfunctioning.
What does the control look like that you use to turn the pump on/off?
Is it an air button or an electronic switch?

This is sounding like a relay not working on the circuit board inside the control box. You will want to have a Kohler service center send someone out to have it checked. You most likely need a new control box.

I have a Kohler whirlpool. When I turn on the pump it leaks under the crawlspace.

Hi,
Most likely the seal at the pump shaft is bad and the water leaks out as the motor is running...this can be fixed by an experienced plumber, but is rather difficult and parts are hard to find.
Replacing the whole pump and motor may be the best option...

Kohler Whirlpool tub motor problem. Turn motor on and trips GFI. It looks like the GFI is wired right and suggestions

Unplug tub from GFI, does GFI hold, plug something else into GFI to see if it holds under load. If all is ok then make sure you have a good ground from the motor to the GFI and the polarity is good. If 120 vac black wire to gold post, white wire to silver post and ground to green. Check proper connections, including polarity and ground at tub junction box and at pump motor it self.

Most Kohler tubs have a water sensor or water level sensor. Is this an air bath tub (holes in the floor)? or a jetted tub? If it is an air bath, the tub will purge after using it 15 to 30 minutes ater it is drained. If it is programable it will come on every 24 hours if it has been programmed. If it is a jetted tub, there may have been water on the sensor and caused it to start up. If it is a single on/off button the switch could have gotten water and caused it to start up, or there is a problem with the control box. It usually will not start a fire if it comes on, most of the newer pumps have run dry seals. If you leave the house for vacation or weekends, I would advise unplugging the tub or turning off the breaker.

My kohler whirlpool wont stay on. It turns off about 1 second after i turn it on

You have a bad capacitor its located on the top of the electric pump motor. Be sure to turn off the power before attempting to replace it.

How to identify make and model of old whirlpool tub?

This is a problem common to all whirlpool/air jet style tubs. The pumps become air locked due to the water evaporating from lack of use. All tubs need, and have, SOME means of priming the pump, this is most likely what the problem was, originally, for you. This time in particular you found it to be electrical in nature but for future reference, for you and all who have these style of tubs, I am putting this out there. Some where on the tub, usually along the top edge of the tub is a vent knob that controls the amount of air that the pump is allowed to mix with the water for the jets, usually by closing this valve all the way (tub needs to be full of water of course) and running the pump for a minute or 2, you should be able to get the pump pumping water again, if not you may need to do something else with your particular set-up to get it purged of air, the pumps in jacuzzi tubs are designed to pump water, not air, so if the motor is running but you get no jet action, your most likely air locked and need to prime pump/purge air.
