SOURCE: My whirlpool top loader won't agitate.

Ok, sorry it took so long to write.  You listed the washer as a Calypso, but it didnt look righ, so did some investigative work for you.  What your describing I believe, is that the agitator top half (or the auger as well them) is sitting still and the bottom half if moving.  During the wash cycle, the top half is just sitting still.  If this is wrong, please let me know.  If this is right, you have a sort of simple fix.  Remove the top cap of the auger, pry gently between the cap and the agitator, the plastic cap will come off.  When you remove the cap, you will see another cap (sometimes you do, sometimes you dont) it will be white or dirty clear in color if its there.  You can put your finger on the lips and lift it straight off.  Then you will see a cap with a bolt in the center.  Remove this bolt (7/16" with long extension).  the agitator dogs (Sears part #387091) 387091.jpg.  You should see these under that last cap tha had the bolt in it.  Remove the auger (just slide it up and off), remove the dog holding cap.  Remove the dogs, but be sure you remember the way they go back in.  Next is the tricky part.  Take the cap upside-down, and place it back in the auger.  Quickly turn it back over, making sure the ag dogs dont fall out of position (you will be hating me the first couple time, just keep at it), then, with a long pair of needle nose, place the bolt you removed back in the hole.  Take your extension with socket, hold the bolt firmly, and slide the auger back on to the top of the agitator.  Make sure the locks and stuff fit right between the two.  Tighten the bolt (just snug, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN, you will split the cap).  If all goes well and right, you should be able to roll the auger one way and not the other.  If you need any further help, or need someone to yell at when the dogs keep falling out, give me a shout, and we'll help you along.  Good Luck!!!!!     Jim

SOURCE: Agitator does minimal agitation

Hi Omni,
The Agitator "dogs"/cams have given up the ghost and need to be replaced. Access to them is easy. Before starting the repair, have this part in hand.

Here's a tool list;
1.) small flat screwdriver (to remove the top part of the agitator)
2.) 3/8" ratchet
3.) 8" X 3/8" extension (for the ratchet)
4.) 7/16" socket

Take a gander at this pic... you'll be going after #10 'cause that's the problem.
38834c8.jpg

All you gotta do is remove the top parts from the agitator to access it. See #2 in the diagram? That's the bolt holding the agitator to the transmission shaft. Remove that, then lift the whole agitator out of the tub. Now place the agitator on the floor and put both of your feet on the base. Now lift the agitator (#3) off the base (#4). Place one of your hands into the opening of the top of the agitator (to hold the cam (#9) in place) then turn the agitator over. The cam will slide right out.

Now you'll see the cam "dogs"... little white curved plastic doo-hickeys. All you gotta do now is install the new cam assy. and rebuild the agitator! Cool, huh? All it takes is about $15 bucks in parts and ~20 minutes.

Let me know if you have further questions. And don't forget to rate my solution as "FixYa"! Thanks, BB

SOURCE: agitator not working

If the entire agitator is slipping, you probably have a loose agitator bolt that requires tightening. If its only the auger (upper portion of the agitator), you have worn agitator dogs that need to be replaced. The following link explains how to replace the dogs:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r823955-replacing_agitator_dogs

The part number for the agitator dogs is included in the link provided, along with how to locate and tighten the agitator bolt if it was found to be loose. Do not overtighten the bolt as this can cause damage to the agitator and/or restrict its movement. Tighten until snug.

The dogs can be purchased at pcappliancerepair.com for about $5. For just a bit more you can use part number 285809 and purchase the entire cam replacement kit which includes the cam, the bearing and the dogs for about $8.

If you have questions about this repair, or need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: washer won't agitate or spin

Hello there and welcome to fixya
there are several things that you will need to check first ok please verrify the following
It doesn't pump or spin
If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:
If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.
If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

Washer won't agitate with clothes in. Will agitate when empty with water

It's a whirlpool top load and 17 years old.
I checked the lid switch, water level switch and they are okay. I replaced the motor coupling. The old one was chewed up and crumbling.
When I put everything back together and turned it on to check if it would spin, I heard a buzzing sound and after a few minutes there was a burning smell.
What should I check to diagnose this problem? would help to have make or model numbers to show age of machine

How do i replace the agitator in my old heavy duty whirlpool washing machone?

Hello.

The Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washing machine is atop-loading clothes washer. The washer has several cycles to choose from, including cycles for washing normal clothes, permanent press items, delicateand items marked "Hand Wash." To do its job, thewashing machine relies on an agitator, located in the center of the wash tub.The agitator rotates during the wash cycle, moving the clothes around the washtub so that they are cleaned equally. If the agitator is broken, it will notsufficiently agitate the clothes and must be replaced. ·1 Unplug the washing machine from the wall outlet or turn off the power supplyin your service panel. · 2 Open thewashing machine lid and remove any clothes remaining inside. · 3 Remove thefabric softener cup by squeezing the bottom lip of the cup and lifting itstraight off. · 4 Pry theagitator cap off of the top of the agitator with a flat-head screwdriver. · 5 Remove thebolt at the bottom of the agitator, using the socket wrench with extension, andthen remove the agitator from the washing machine. Tip the agitator to removethe bolt and washer. · 6 Install thenew agitator onto the drive shaft. · 7 Secure thenew agitator with the bolt that you originally removed. · 8 Press theagitator cap and fabric softener cup back into position on top of the newagitator. · 9 Restore powerto the washing machine to complete the repair.
Thanks.
