Re: usb device not recongized
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

some times the usb plug is bad or usb drivers are bad. for the first it ask more expertize to remove the bad one and to replace it by a new one. for the second option, just go on line. type in , fix it center , you will be directed to mictosoft fix it center where you will have to choose your problem. here you will choose the hardware not recognized. then you will have to download a small fix it program whci must be run and resolve the problem
May god bless you dear, because WD devices are so delicate that you need to be extra careful with them. Have you tried connecting it to me other computer? Try changing the USB cable as well? Post me the update.
Are you sure you're not clicking on the cd/dvd drive in your system? When you insert your usb stick the existing drive letters may get displaced which can easily be confusing. Just to be sure, pop a cd in your drive and see if it opens when you click on it (when you've got your usb stick inserted) If you right-click on your drives and select 'properties' you can see which one is 4gb which will identify your usb drive. Regards, nicam49
Try connecting the device to a different USB port, preferably at the back of the computer, if it is a desktop. Otherwise, try updating the USB drivers, if you know how to go about doing that. Restarting the computer with the device plugged in also MIGHT fix the problem. Good luck ;)
wat is the error msg tht u get?? Did tht pen drive came with a cd......try connecting the pendrive to all usb ports on the system....if tht doesnt wrk, go to device manager & then uninstall all usb root hub under usb option.....restart system thn chk
do you have the lastest drivers for your chipset (motherboard) installed? are you using the front or rear USB ports? If you're using the front then make sure the front panel USB ports are actually plugged into the motherboard.
Hiya dtwhite... I would suggest that the hard drive has died.. "Elements" are notorious for giving up the ghost, and normally around the 13months mark! I had a 320gb hard drive with exactly the same symptoms. Lost a helluva lot of music and photos!
One sure fire way of eliminating, whether it is just the leads at fault, or connections.. on the unit .. which very rarely it can be.. is to take out the hard drive and connect direct to your pc.. as a slave.. ( Do you know how?)... you may get lucky and find it still works... I would suggest though that if you are.. move evrything off ASAP on to something a little more reliable like a Western Digital... Never had a prob with this brand.. or indeed Toshiba! who are relatively new to the hard drive world. Use your Elements purely as an absolute emergency backup drive.
Remember to earth yourself and comp before removing or replacing anything.. or it will turn out to be an expensive exercise.
