If the motor is running but the agitator is not moving, generally the drive coupler under the agitator is stripped out. Pull the agitator straight up and off. This can be harder than it sounds. You might have to put a rope or belt under the agitator and secure the other end to a 2 x 4 or broom handle and yank it up and off. The up side down plastic can shaped thing you see with one bolt holding in down is the thing to replace. When you have it off, try to turn the splined shaft with your fingers. Not able to turn = good. Able to turn = bad transmission.

Maytag top loader won't agitate. will fill and spin

Hello,

Try this:
When the washer should be agitating, try turning your load size switch back and forth a few times. If you are on a medium load, going to a larger load should cause it to begin filling again, going to a smaller size should start the motor for agitate. If this works, your pressure / water level sense switch is okay, but the switch for load size is faulted / or is on its way out. If you went from a medium load, to a higher load, then your pressure switch is faulted as well.

WAsher will not spin or agitate

This is usually caused by the coupler. There is a video showing how to replace at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html

Knocking noice in agitation cycle

Do you get same sound if you run through a wash cycle empty (no clothes?) using detergent? If so, then likely a basket support has come loose (check deep inside along top ring). If not, then you may be overloading washer (unless using different sized loads), or the agitator is not working like it should, and basket is torquing.

My Maytag Ensignia washer is not spinning well. It bangs side to side with even the smallest loads. It seems like something is loose. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need a repair mans help....

Try leveling the washer... If the washer is level, then don't wrap the clothes around the agitator...drop the clothes straight in, on top of each other evenly around the agitator. The Ensignia washer has a Dual action agitator... That means the clothes roll over them selves, instead of moving side to side, as with a traditional agitator. wrapping the clothes around the agitator will cause the load to be un balanced and then cause the "banging" noise... this should take care of the problem...

The agitator works intermittently

Replace the agitator dogs (4 small white/beige plastic parts) inside the agitator, they are worn.

Washer will not agitate

A wears out clutch might prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. Good luck!

Wheezing sound

The inside tub moves on the spin stage only and cause the water, by a centrifugal force, to be forced out of the clothes. During the wash cycle, the tub is stationary and the agitator moves forth and back. If you would like to remove the agitator - Remove the inner agitator cap (inside the top of the agitator) and then open the screw (be aware not to lose parts !) Good luck !
