SOURCE: Device Drivers
So you just did a reinstall of Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. You can actually download the drivers for you laptop at this location: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4M_8600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
Now about the items listed:
1.) Multimedia Audio Controller = SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97
2.) Network Controller = Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller (wired)
3.) PCI Modem = check out the list since there is a lot of items listed
4.) Video Controller (VGA Compatible) = check out the list since there is a lot of items listed
One way to find out the correct driver is by checking the details of your computer at this link: https://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?~ck=ln&~tab=2&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen just enter your service tag.
Otherwise, please contact Dell Technical Support so that they can give you the information you need and they can even guide you in reinstalling the drivers.
Hope this helps!

To make sure that you will be able to download the correct driver of your laptop, go to support.dell.com,click driver and downloads, enter the service tag of your computer that is the 7 alpha numeric characters found on your laptop, or you can go to your bios press f2 when you see the dell logo and you will see there the system setup try to find your service tag, once you had enter it on support.dell.com, all of your appropriate drivers that came with your system will show up, but if for example your operating systems is windows xp then you change to vista check if there is a drop down box there to change the os, if not click on the search box on the support.dell.com and then type in the name of your audio card and then put vista ( example sigmatel driver vista).
