Rattling noise coming from upper compartment

The vacuum is working, but there is a loud rattling sound coming from the upper chamber and I can't open it up to see what it might be. ( sounds like stones swirling around in there )

The All Floors model has a protective belt clutch system and the rattling sound means the clutch has slipped. This would have to be repaired officially by a Dyson repairer.

Something could be jammed, or not rotating freely, maybe an improper alignment with the brushes, or a blocakage within them. Try to re adjust the brushes :)

Something broke or got sucked in and is trapped in there. Put it up on a table and take the bottom apart, it's time to clean the roller anyway :)

    Strange rattling noises

I only hear rattling sounds when my Roomba has picked up something (like a coin sized item) that is too big/heavy to pass through to the filter compartment. Flip it over on it's back, unlatch the cover on the left and right sides and pop out the two spinning bars. Usually whatever was making the sound is caught there. Since your bars are out, give it a good cleaning. Remove all the hair anywhere you see it.

Broken fan maybe. If the fan is has come loose from the motor shaft, it will rattle and there will be little or no suction. A trip to the local vacuum guy may be in order.

    Loud rattling noise.

Hi there SmartAlec from here. Often when an upright is making a rattling noise it can be something caught in the roller and every time the brush turns it knocks against the body and since it turns really fast it can sound quite bad. Take the roller out and clean inside that area and see if that helps. Hope it does. Happy Vacuuming :)

If its a cracking sound or a rattling sound then the drive belt has gone and on this model, it has a protective belt. Check the guarantee on your model if its still in warranty you could get a free repair. Otherwise you're looking at an official repair as generally owners can't replace belts on the Animal/protective belt models.

This sounds like something is caught in the brush roller. It is not uncommon for something like a pin, or nail or something of that nature to get caught in the roller chamber and when the roller spins, it will rub on the roller producing that sound. Sort of like putting a playing card in the spokes of your bike when you were a kid. Take the bottom plate off and remove the roller. Inspect the area around the roller for any foreign objects. While your there, check the belt for wear and tension and also check the roller bearings for any material that would interfere with it's smooth rotation. You should also check the hose intake for blockage.
