Question about Dell 942 All-In-One InkJet Printer

"add paper" cannot be cleared

When printing on Dell all-in-one 942 the "add paper" comes on. Even when paper is added this mesage does not clear and obviously printer does not print. What is the probem?

Carriage jam errors usually mean something is blocking the carriage from moving. It's usually a crumpled piece of paper left over from clearing a jam, or a faulty purge unit/capping assembly.

You should check to see if the printhead is locked or movable when you power off the unit. If it will move freely when it should be locked then something is blocking it from moving into the "home" position. If there is no foreign object inside then the capping mechanism in the wiper or purge unit may be broken or jammed. Oft times a good disassembly and bath for the purge unit will get it working again. However, this depends on how technically skilled you are and how much the machine is worth. It would take at least an hour in a shop. If you don't do it yourself and the machine is worth less than $100, it may be time to replace the machine.

Dell all in one 942 ink jet printer reads "clear paper jam" there is no paper stuck. How do I fix?


Try this; Remove the cartridges, disconnect the usb cable, turn off the machine, unplug the power chord and switch off the adaptor from the wall switch, leave the machine for few minutes while you do some cleaning, like cartridges contact points, clean the rear panel door, also open the front panel door and check for any foreign particles, you should remember that even a small/tiny piece of thread or hair can create this problem. Now connect the power chord, switch on the wall switch, and power on the printer without the cartridges installed and the usb cable connected. Use the Power Button the switch on the printer. Leave it Switched On for few minutes and again turn it off, install the cartridges, connect the usb cable and again reboot the unit. Press the power button once and again keep pressing when it starts booting. If the problem still persists, your printer needs service.

My Dell 942 printer will not pull the paper into the printer, unless the sheet is pushed in very far. The roller spins but does not grab the paper. Any thoughts? For one sheet I can print with the added...


If you use coated or matte paper at all, it will slowly put a coating on the pinch rollers, causing the problem you describe.

Get some isopropyl alcohol and lint free rags and clean the rollers thoroughly. That should solve the problem.

Can't print & causes a paper jam.


Take a can of BlowOff compressed air and blow out any thing that shouldn't be in there, crumbs, stickers, glue from lables, Also get a damp cloth and gently wash off the paper rollers (those black rollers on a bar that advance the paper through the printer.
If you still have a problem with actual printing, you might try removing the drivers (add and remove programs-control panel) and look on the dell site for updated drivers for that all-in-1
Fresh driver can sometimes help.

It might be time to, but try these first:

(1) Try rebooting the computer (Press Ctrl+Alt+Del>Shutdown>Shutdown OR press and hold the power button down on the front of the workstation/computer/tower/CPU until the unit turns OFF)

(2) If that doesn’t work, then try clearing the print queue: Start>Settings>Printers>Double-click on the printer>Right-click on the print job(s) and click cancel/delete/purge documents and try reprinting a document

(3) If that doesn’t work, then try a power cycle: Try turning the printer off, then unplug the power supply from the printer, then unplug the USB cable from the printer then the back of the computer; wait 30 second; then plug the USB cable back into the computer, then back into the printer then plug the power supply back into the printer and turn it on – run a test print

(4) Run a Test Print: Start>Settings>Printers>Right-click on the printer>Properties>Print Test Page

Carrier jam


Hi , check the belt may loose , the tensioner not working or belt not in pulley alignment.

hi galeinna,

I suggest you make sure that your printer is configured to print to the correct type of paper. I assume you are trying to print to A4 size paper.

If you are using Windows XP you can follow these steps to configure the printer:

1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes
2. Right-click on the 942 printer icon and click on Printer
preferences
.
3. Click on the Paper Setup tab and select the A4 type at
Paper Size.

If this doesn't fix the problem with the print output, I suggest you download the latest version of the 942's driver at
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A942&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
and reinstall the printer using this driver.

I have had the clear carrier jam problem the past 3months, spoke to over ten technicians but no one seems to have been able to resolve it, let alone clearly explain the cause. But just to say buy another printer.

How many Dell 942 printer am I going to buy!!!!!?????
