Question about Whirlpool GC5SHEXNS Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Both sides are not cooling

Our son got a snack out in the middle of the night and left the freezer door open. The next morning both sides stopped cooling. What should we look for to fix the problem? Thanks for your help!!

We took off the back freezer wall, and the coils didn't have a speck of ice on them, and look like new. Can you advise what I can try next?

  • kkruzick02 Jan 11, 2009

Yes, the fan in the freezer runs and the fan by the compressor runs as well. We sweep out the coils in the back by the compressor. We were hoping it wasn't the compressor. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks a ton for your help!!! Kim

Leaving the door open allowed an unusual amount of moisture laden air to enter the refrigerator, resulting in excessive frost build up on the evaporator. That frost is blocking the cooling coils so air can no longer pass through them. You can fix this by unplugging the refrigerator for a day or so, allowing the frost to melt, or taking the back wall out from behind the freezer shelves and melting the frost off with a hair blower.

Does the refrigerator run? (compressor, fan by the compressor, and, if you open the freezer door and hold in the door switch, does the freezer fan run?)

When the freezer fan and the fan by the compressor are both running, the compressor should be running also. If it is, (and continues to run the whole time the fans are running) and you have no or very little cooling, you have either a refrigerant leak or a low capacity compressor.(both are basically death sentences for your refrig) If the compressor stops and the fans continue to run, I would suspect a voltage supply problem. (too high or too low voltage) Incorrect voltage will cause the compressor to get hot and stop until it cool off enough to restart. The voltage problem can be caused by a poor electrical connection within the refrigerator, or the outlet, plug, or breaker supplying power. If you are not experiencing other voltage related problem in your house (dim or overly bright lights, motor starting problems, etc.) try using a heavy extension cord to plug refrig into a receptacle which is on a different breaker.

Another possibility would be a "hard starting" compressor or a bad start relay. If your refrig has an electronic control board, that can cause non-starting compressor also. Aside from checking your voltage, you may have to call a service person to check this unit out. (if the coils were clear of frost, your son is off the hook for causing the problem)

Don't know how long you allowed your refrig to run after closing door before you decided you had a problem. It could take several hours for it to catch up even if it was working correctly. (if it is working correctly, you should have seen a light frost on the coils when you examined them)

Now, how about changing my rating to at least a "helpful" ?

Freezer not freezing

Because it stopped cooling so fast, over night, I would make sure the compressor is running and the condenser fan motor that sits next to it.
