Your capstan motor may be so badly worn that it is time for a new motor. Motors that are old and worn usually do speed up until the brushes break inside and the motor just stops. You do not state the model but there are guys that still work on them.

it has probably thrown the capstan belt and will require a new belt fitted. the transport relies on capstan rotation to engage play. a separate reel motor operates ff/rew and takeup funtions

SOURCE: Tape deck turns on, operation sounds & looks NORMAL- yet won't function

Belts are prone to harden over time, like 10 years. The belt probably broke.

If you don't feel comfortable removing the housing yourself, take it to a repair shop.

SOURCE: Tape cassette deck - tape speed too fast in reverse mode only

Be sure the pinch roller behind the capstan is moving into place like it should. Otherwise, the take-up drive will pull the tape through faster than it should.

Check leaf switches and also, press play -- after a few minutes, feel motor(s) for heat build up. If it gets hot, either motor is bad of something is preventing it from rotating

Where can I get a pickup motor for a Nakamichi 680 ZX Tape Deck

If you need a cam motor, they can be found but mounting might have to be modified. The best way to get an answer is to connect with those Technician who used to work for the company in the past. On Tapeheads dot net the user name Nakdoc or Perry would be the best people to deal with in this case. They are both Technicians who could fix it for you as well as get it going in the best of condition.

Why will the Pioneer RT 707 not work in playback mode?

No it is the same motor for both functions. Just check does the record/play switch operate or move when you operate the record function? I have a hunch that is the problem it may also be that the switch contacts are dirty or worn.Try to play a recording you made on another machine if it does sound and play on the other machine then the problem can only be this switch. Some more upstairs decks do have separate amplifiers for play and record .Nakamichi. Studer Revox Tandberg Uher and the such comes to mind These are those machines offering "Off tape" recording monitor. Then it will sport three heads and not only two I hope this gives clues where to start looking for problems

Nakamichi cassette deck one. i bought new motor for this deck because the old one was surging (checked the voltage for fluctuation 1st to make sure it wasnt a pre-motor problem). installed it and the new...

There will be either a hole in the top of the motor with a speed adjusting preset. Or there will be one on the printed circuit board. New Motors don't come set up. You have to adjust them for each deck. You will need a small screwdriver to adjust. You will have to figure out by ear when the speed is right.

Tape is slow and whirring noise

Alex somebody technical will have to look at what is wrong with your deck. What is the shape of this piece of plastic I tried to service a Nakamichi the other day and the reason for the deck to burn one of the motors from a sticker that was used for the identification and it jammed the mechanism up. It sound as if there is a part from the Pause control if this is one of the units in those made in China after about 1990

Nakamichi BX 300 tape deck runs slow in play, belts and idler have been replaced

There is an adjustment in the motor that sets the speed however you need to have a frequency counter and speed alignment tape to adjust the speed correctly. There was also suppose to be oiling of the mechansm at the time the belts were put on.

Cassette door will not open in my Pioneer CT-A9

Hi Russell,
Sound to me like another cam operated mechanism. I just had a Nakamichi brought to me the other day with the same symptoms.
If you turn the unit on and listen closely, you might hear a motor running inside, this motor is running because it is trying to initialize the deck mechanism. The reason it can not is that a cam belt that goes from the motor to the pulley that operates the cam is loose, broken or turned to goo. These belts just do not pop in and often require the deck be taken apart a ways to get to the belt. There is also lubrication and cleaning of old grease out of cam gears and slide plates. This is where a Technician is needed. I am in the Chicago area in case you need my help- If you are in New Jersey I can give you the name of another business. Please advise of your location and we can go from there.

My Nakamishi Cassette Deck 2 is eating tape. It switches off when it does, but how can I fix this? From the look of it this cassette deck has the same cassette drive as the DR-8. Is that correct?

It could be the take up spindle does not have enough torque causing the tape to bunch up after the capstan. If you open up the unit you will notice ether belts or rollers for the tape drive. If it has belts you can replace the belt after cleaning the pulleys. If it has rollers you may be able to clean them with a rubber cleaner (not alcohol which will dry the rubber and cause glazing). Make sure the capstan and the pinch roller is clean using a rubber revitalizing cleaner on the pinch roller. "Goof off" from a hardware store is great for the capstan if it has a lot of metal oxide on it.

Tape deck not working

Sounds like a motor problem. Try turning the motor by hand to see if it's bound up.
