If you want to reuse the processor and Ram from the broken board you'll need to buy a board that they'll be compatable with ....I would suggest going to your local independant PC shop and getting some quotes....also bear in mind that some motherboards come with different ports on the back eg parallel printer port....so make sure the board has what you need

Probably hardware failure. To test that remove all disks and extra components and try again to boot into BIOS. If you can't then you will know for sure. If you can then take the opportunity to change the boot order and put the cd first and the hd second. Now connect an optical unit and try to boot in a bootable disk, preferably a Linux Live-CD. If you can then the hard disk is dead, replace it.
How did you determine that the MB was dead? Do you know how to use a post card and do you have one? How old is your computer and is it worth it to replace the MB? It is usually fairly easy to find a replacement MB on Ebay. Although, today desktops are so inexpensive that you may want to try that route. If you do replace the MB make sure that your power supply is adequate. We build systems every day and we never use less than 450W. Well, I think gateway is just a computer manufacturer, so if you are still under warranty, you could possibly get a replacement. But before doing anything, and if you are comfortable with doing so, open up the side of the casing, and take a look around, see if any cables seem unconnected.
If the power went out while it was on it may have been given a surge. If that is the case the motherboard is going to need to be replaced. Check the power supply connection on the motherboard if it is discolored then that is the problem.
The capacitors in the onboard power supplies fail. There are usually visible signs in the form of the ends of the caps being swelled up. Happens to monitors too, and not just the Gateway brand is affected. It's not bad design, but the capacitor makers made a batch (and it's a big batch!) of parts with bad chemistry, and sold them to lots of manufacturers. Replacing the caps fixes the problems, but the work involves good soldering skills. Yeah, you can go buy another brand, but given what I just shared with you, you may find problems again. Even the replacement parts can go bad. Regarding your class action idea, yeah you can sue anybody for anything these days but bear in mind: the manufacturer's warranty sets the terms, and you agreed to those terms when you bought the product. The warranty is a legal and binding contract both ways. And if it has expired, it has expired. The only exception may be specific state laws that mandate rights or extensions not specified in the warranty contract. Your class-action is then limited to owners within that state's jurisdiction.
You do not neccesarily have to use an exact replacement although that usually makes the replacement easier. As long as the specifications of the existing motherboard and the replacemant board are exact in some ways, especially processor socket type, memory speed and type and maximum allowable size per memory slot.
