Question about Toshiba 56HM195 56" Projection HDTV

56HM195 Light Engine Troubleshooting

I have a barely used but out of warranty 56HM195. A minute or two after turning the set on, video on the left side of the screen begins to display a block pattern (it looks plaid, if you can imagine that). The dividing line is straight down the middle. After the TV cools down and I power it up again, the picture looks great for a minute or two, so I'm guessing it may be a thermal issue of some sort. It looks as if replacing the light engine is a simple process. However, before going to the expense of getting a new one, is there any troubleshooting to the module I can do? If not, do you know of any good rebuilders? Thanks.

You should make sure that the onscreen menus are effected by the problem if they look OK and just the video bihind them is distorted the problem is in the digital video or what Toshiba calls the seine module. Probably not though it sounds like an engine. PTS electronics rebuilds some engines however most Toshiba engines are relatively reasonable.

a PROBLEM likely to be either in the optical light engine or a separate digital board in the set---engine is more likely and a very expensive part not to mention labor.

Very well could be the light engine my friend. Contact Tri state repairs. They rebuild and refurbish light engines for alot of maufacturers, even the Toshiba DLP sets, as that is what you have. Your problem certainly sounds like the light engine, but is hard to say without looking at the set. I have a 4 year old Toshiba-56HM195 with blueish haze.I have place the engine light 3 rme in 3 year bulb 3 time in 3 year it's been a year seen I dn it which one is going out .


Yuor covergence board is bad and you need to have a tech replace the convergence IC's on the board and bad electrolytic caps, or buy a new one at www.partstore.com

Is this on all inputs? Have you tried unplugging the set for 2 minutes then trying it again? Did you check all of the connection ong to the set such as component cables leading to a HD cable box? If so then the parts should still be under manufactures warranty.

Redish distorted cable picture until I change input source and then go back to cable input


When you say brand new, just how new is it? Your unit could be covered by the warranty. Certainly something worth checking into. If it works fine on all inputs except cable and the cable box has been changed your problem is probably in the digital receiver in the TV. This is something you will need a qualified repair tech to look at but should not be an expensive fix (compared to the cost of the unit). First make sure it is not covered under warranty. Free is still better than having to pay! Good luck.
