Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

When turning on power it shuts down

If it is shutting off as opposed to restarting it is most likely a heating problem or possibly dead fan. There are fail safes in computers that will cause them to shut off if they can't detect a fan or are too hot.

Dell Inspiron 5100, win XP. 1. fan continously blowing 2. after a few minutes unattended, it switches off. no reason whatsoever.

Your problem is that the computer is overheating and the thermal switch is shutting it down. What you need to do is to blow out the computer with compressed air. "Air in a can" will do, but air from a shop compressor will do a better job if you have it available. When blowing it out, be sure to blow the air into all vents until no more dust comes out. also be sure not to damage anything inside by getting the nozzle too close to components. This will fix your shutdown problem. Best wishes!

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!
