Function F7 to disable the touch pad and the same buttons to enable it. The function key is the button with Fn. on it.

Good luck and don't forget to rate my answer.

Hi, and thanks for your suggestion. Actually, Fn+F7 blackens the screen for me, but Fn+F9 does the trick of disabling the Smartpad. Thanks for the pointer, which pointed in approximately the right direction for me.

Hi Charlie,
You can alter the touch sensitivity of the touchpad. Just go to Control Panel > Mouse > click the Device Settings tab > highlight the touchpad in the list and click Settings. At the bottom of the list on the left hand side, it will say Sensitivity. Click on that and a sub menu will drop down. Click Touch Sensitivity, and you can drag the slidebar to the right for 'Heavy Touch', meaning it will be less affected by you leaning your wrists in order to type comfortably.

I am using Vista, so your set up might be different, but there will be a similar way of doing this in XP, if you just apply similar logic to it.

Hope this helps:)

My cursor jumps back to the beginning when i'm trying to type. i'm constantly having to backspace and correct and reset my cursor. any suggestions?

Disable your touchpad if you consistently have this problem.

When you are typing something, and you suddenly touch the touchpad (tapping this touchpad moves the cursor) then your cursor will suddenly change position which then mess up your typing.

If you don'r have an external mouse connected, better be careful not to touch the touchpad. If you have an external mouse, better disable this touchpad.

Cursor jumping around when typing on a Dell 1530

It is most likely the touch pad...a way you can tell is if you have a USB mouse, turn off the touch pad and use the USB mouse...go to type and see if it still jumps around.

My touchpad is too sensitive

1. Go to the "Control Panel" and double click on the "Mouse" item.
2. Go through the tabs in the "Mouse Properties" window & find the tab where you can set up your touchpad. This differs from laptop to another since it is based on the touchpad's drivers.
3. On that tab, find the "Sensitivity" setting. Try changing this setting to lower the sensitivity of the touch pad to the degree you find acceptable.
4. Click "Apply" to apply the changes, then close the "Mouse Properties" window.

I don't know if you mean that your cursor suddenly moves as you are typing? If so, it is likely your touch pad is too sensitive. I have a mouse w/mouse pad but never disabled the touch pad. So i disabled the touch pad and it solved it for me. If you want to be sure it is the touch pad being over sensitive, then type a paragraph but keep your fingers and palms far away from the touch pad. If the problem improves, like it did for me, then the touchpad is too sensitive. You can go into the settings for the touchpad to change the sensitivity setting to make it less senstive and see if that works and it does not then press Fn +F7 keys to disable the touchpad.

Cursor jumps around

If your cursor moves erratically on the screen (for example, if it jumps around the screen, moves at varying speeds, or selects items on its own), perform the following steps:
  1. Clean the surface of the touchpad with a dry, soft cloth to remove grease, sweat, moisture, or other liquids.
  2. Adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad:.
    1. Click the Start button and click Control Panel.
    2. Click Printers and Other Hardware.
    3. Click Mouse.
    4. When the Mouse Properties window appears, click the Pointer Options tab. (Figure 1)

      Figure 1: Pointer Speed
    5. Under Select a pointer speed:, click to move the slider bar closer to Slow.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Check to see if the touch pad still behaves erratically.
  3. If the touchpad still caused the cursor to behave erratically, attach an external mouse to your computer and restart your computer. Use the external mouse to see if your cursor still moves erratically.

Cursor jumps around

Try this software:

http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/downloads/list

Touch Freeze will disable the touchpad when you start typing. I have not used it, but give it a try.

Also, your touchpad could be wearing out or a driver reinstall could be in order. My wifes Toshiba had a bad touchpad and the cursor would jump all over the place. I disabled it and she now uses an external mouse. No problems anymore.

I had the same problem. It is due to the touch pad being to sensitive. My fix was to buy a usb mouse, and disable to trackpad by hitting the Fn key and F7. No problems anymore

Acer Vista Laptop and cursor nightmare!!

Hi -
I've been having the same problem and it is MAJORLY annoying to be typing along, and have the cursor reappear on another line!

I had a heck of a time finding the place to disable the touchpad, since we use a USB mouse with the laptop. Turns out, someone else helped me find a simple way - hold down the Fn key (next to the left side CNTRL key), and hit F7. That toggles the touchpad off/on easily!

Also suggested by someone else, some mice can cause erratice behavior with Acer laptops, so perhaps try another mouse?

So far, I've been typing this response AFTER disabling the touchpad, and the cursor has not jumped around at all.

Good luck! : )

Cursor skips lines while typing

My experience: cursor suddenly moving backward when i was typing, or moving somewhere else on the page. I would be typing and text suddenly would get highlighted. I followed someone's advice to disable the touch pad. Since I do have a mouse & key pad that was all i had to do.
HOW TO DISABLE THE TOUCHPAD FOR ACER 3680 AND OTHERS??? PRESS Fn +F7
Yep, it was that simple. At first I made sure i typed without my fingers or palms touching or near the touchpad. I noticed it seemed to stop or happen less. Soon as I disabled the touch pad all is back to normal. Yet I spent hrs trying to find out how and there were all these posts by people suggesting downloads and other more complicated things etc..
