What does it mean when phone is on desktop loop

Hi Shaundra,

A loop line or loop around is a telephone company test circuit. The circuit has two associated phone numbers. When one side of the loop is called (side A), the caller receives a test tone of approximately 1000 Hz(milliwatt test). When the second number (side B) is called, it produces dead silence, but the party on side A hears the milliwatt test tone drop, and is connected to the person on side B. The purpose of the loop around test is to allow circuit testing to a distant central office without needing a person at the far end. The technician can send a tone down either line and measure the response tone on the second line to determine the path loss parameters.

Power supply was shuting down after a while and now it will only power up for a few seconds. If i unplug the power cord for about 5-10 minutes system will come on for about 5-10 seconds.

This may be a bad power supply or an overheating problem. be sure the cpu cooling fan is spinning and you don't get, possibly, a siren tone from the computer (usual warning of over heating) Make sure the heat sink cooling fins aren't clogged with dust and that the heat sink is attached to the CPU correctly. sometimes a clip breaks and the sink loses contact with the chip. if this happens, the chip will overheat almost immediately.
good luck

Fan just work for seconds

Replace the fan or your computer will run hot and keep turning off.

Or are you saying this is what happens when you power on the computer? if so: When you press the power button do you hear fansrunning, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lightsconstantly blinking, hear the DvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer ofthe DvD/CD turn on for a second or two? If so the laptop is trying toboot or may have booted, but the screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

Computer won't start up and has a constant tone.

If the noise is constant then it means the problem is either:

1: a Power supply issue
2: a motherboard issue
3: a keyboard problem

the latter of the three being the easiest to fix, try booting with your keyboard unplugged or even better if you have another keyboard try using it to see if that corrects the problem.

If the above does not work then you have a problem with 1 or 2, and in order to find out for certain you will need to test it, you can goto your local computer diagnostic store to see if they can check which it is.

and hope its not a problem with the motherboard.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck

Ok new problem My Compaq is still beeping and now the screem stay

Hi Mate

Unless you have just added a new harware component this is realy bad news. If you have remove whatever it is and see if you can't get the system to boot.

Sounds very much like the MB has failed, probably due to a power spike. If the unit is still under warranty it would be worth trying to make a warranty claim otherwize most home and contents insurance cover this type of damage.

If you realy want to trouble shoot yourself and see wether it is the MB crack the case and pull everything bar the cpu, ram and vga, flash JP1 or BIOS/CMOS jumper and see wether it will boot with a single tone and a display. If it does your on a winner just start reconecting each component one at a time re-booting each time untill you come across the component that has failed and replace it.

O.K. just a few hints for working on the guts of a computer:

Static precautions: No need for an anti static wrist strap just make sure that at all times that you are handling an internal component that the power is off at the wall, one part of your body is in contact with the frame of the computer and that you handle cards/RAM by the edges or the "tounge".

Flashing the BIOS: This sets the MB back to its factory set defaults, basicaly a safe/optimal configuration. the jumper will be labled (in teeny weeny litle leters) as JP1, BIOS or CMOS or even CIMOS. It will have three pins with one jumper covering the central pin and one other. WITH THE POWER OFF. Move the jumper so that it covers the central pin and the previously exposed one, hold for three seconds and return back. This is efectively the hardware equivalent of the three fingered salute.

Hope this helps but if I was a betting man I would have my money on the MB, keep all the rest of your components and replace the MB wich will probably require a change in CPU.

Sacraficial power boards with LAN and modem conections are inexpensive and save a lot of tears.

Kind regards

Taking forever to reinstall XP Home Edition

To clear the NVRAM, perform the following steps:

Restart your computer.

At the first text on the screen or at the Dell logo, press the <F2> key every three seconds until the message Entering Setup appears.
The System Setup screen appears.

Press the <Caps Lock> key, the <Scroll Lock> key, and the <Num Lock> key to light up all three lights on the keyboard.

Press the <Alt> and <E> keys at the same time.
The system will emit a beep tone to indicate that NVRAM has been cleared.

Press the <Esc> key, and then press the <Enter> key to save the changes and reboot the system.

Proceed with the installation or troubleshooting that you were attempting
