Sounds like you have changed the theme settings. To change the theme in Vista
right click on the desktop
To change the theme in XP
right click on the desktop
you well be presented with the dispaly properties box
the first tab is themes, click the drop down arrow and select a theme. That should change the whole appearence of you computer , including the colour of the taskbar.

Restart your computer Sometimes, a simple restart can bring back the scroll bar to its original form.
Right-click anywhere on your desktop. Click on "Properties" if you are using Windows XP. Select "Personalize" if you use Windows Vista or Windows 7 and click on "Windows Color and Appearance." Then click on "Open classic appearance properties for more color options."
Click on the "Advanced" button.
Click on the "Item" drop-down menu. Select "Scroll bar."
Change the width by entering "17" under the "Size" category. 17 is the default scroll bar width for Windows operating system
Click on "OK" and select "Apply" to end task.

Hold down the CTRL ALT and DEL buttons and that would pull up the task manager. You can see in there what is running and turn it off temporarily but there is a better way.
Once you do that, you can click on the start button and click on RUN. In that box type in MSCONFIG and press enter that will bring you into the system configuation utility. Click on the startup tab and everything in the list with a checkmark besides it loads up when you boot up into windows. You uncheck any box you want and it will keep those programs from loading up when you turn on the computer.
After you uncheck what you want, then click on APPLY and then OK and let the computer restart and it should run a bit faster.
Try these out and it should speed up your computer and it will be easier to do things.
your sound drivers may not be correct.
Do you have a volume icon in your task bar.
If not then go to control panel then sounds and audio device.See in there if you have the option to show icon in task bar.If the colour is faded and you can't change the options then it probably is a sound driver problem So you will need to reinstall your driver
ok sometimes this happen and the bottom bar of the screen disappears with the destop icons so go to task manager by clicking Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click on 'New Task' and type in 'explorer.exe' and it should come up. You should do this everytime when you start your computer if the icon disappears everytime.
You cannot delete the icon from the task bar as it only displays the start up programs running on the computer. I have given the steps below.
Click start, than click run. In this box type "msconfig" without quotes. You will see the list of startup programs. Uncheck the ones related to the Simple center Media. Click Aply, Than click close, than click Restart computer now.
The program will not load automatically and you would not see the icon in the taskbar.
I am sure this will help. Please update me on the same.
