Re: HDD not recognized in XP Installation

If you are using it as a slave hard drive, you should be able to right click my computer, manage, then in next window double click storage, then disk management, then look for your drive, you can then look to see if its recognised, if not it will tell you that its not configured, and you should be able to right click on it and format it.

I have LatitudeD510 and my disk makes lot of noise. Its on Windows7 and I think the disk is a Hitachi - HTS541040G9AT00

chances are that you simply do not have the resources to run windows 7. These are the basic (recommended minimum), for windows 7

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • 1 more GB of RAM & 15 GB more HDD space to run 7 in XP Mode.

These are the typical resources that come with your machine.

  • Processor Pentium M 1.73 GHz
  • Ram Installed Size 512.0 MB
  • Technology DDR2 SDRAM
  • Hard Drive 40.0 GB

  • OS Provided Microsoft Windows XP Professional
It would probably be advisable to go back to XP
Good luck

I have Windows XP with service pack 3. My system no longer recognizes the Maxtor 3200 external hard drive. Do I need to get an updated driver to the hard drive? When I first connected the Maxtor HD. ...

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 7200 RPM 30.7 GB HDD suddenly makes clicking sound when started and will not be recognized by Win XP OS. The drive had been working flawlessly. Any suggestions?

Clicking sounds is an indication that the platters have a bad device internally. Once that happens the hard drive is no good, run the serial# on Maxtors website to see if its still under warranty, gd lk

There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. Click on the link below and install the "Fixit" patch to enable your PC to recognize your HD. Best of luck.

Maxtor External 500 GB Hard Drive

Hi, 1. "Is the data recoverable?" Yes but the manner by which it can be recovered can be either very expensive (their are firms whose specialty id data recovery) or none at all if you do DIY (do it yourself) or worst case not economical reasonable but recovery possible. I would assume that your would want to try DIY. 1.1 Run diagnostic on the external drive using scandisk, Norton Disk Doctor, Partition Magic's ChkDsk and/or Check Errors. Recovery can be done using a recovery software such as GetDataBack; or 1.2 You need an external desktop PC, a working knowledge of computer hardware. You have to disassemble the external HD and remove the actual HD. Physicall connect it to the 2nd PC (desktop) as a seconday Master either by IDE or SATA as applicable. If detected by the desktop PC in the bios, you should be able to work on it even if with errors; 1.3 If mechanical problem or otherwise, you may want to check out this posting > Hope this works out for you and/or give you some ideas. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.
