I can't open the DVD door on my Gateway SX2370 and can't find the reset button (pinhole you would stick a paperclip into). Any idea where it is?

Straighten a paperclip & insert it into the pinhole afront the DVD drive until the drive door opens no further. Carefully but firmly pull it open the rest of the way. Some optical disk drives (ODD's) that tend to require this eject method function just dandy as long as there's an optical disk in the drive. So, it might be a good idea to leave one in there until the drive is replaced. For drives that Windows "cannot find," uninstall such ODD's from the Device Manager & run Microsoft's FixIt tool (Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can't read or write media) for problems with getting a CD/DVD to read/write.

No sound and cant read dvd

Make sure you have the right sound card drivers installed. If you do and theres no sound. Then configure your sound settings in what ever player you're using. If that doesn't work then you might have a faulty sound card. As for the DVD issue, check and see if the disc is scratched. If the disc is fine then check to see if your DVD drive is working properly by putting in another DVD disc. If that doesn't work then check and see if your player is the problem.

DVD-R doesn't work

I can't seem to find THAT particular model number on Samsungs website. So I can only offer generalized advice.

It sounds like you are not getting power to this optical unit, as you said you don't get any activity light blinking.

Most Notebook manufacturers make their DVD units so that they can be swapped with other components. (Ie... a Floppy drive or additional battery etc....) If you have such a unit please swap out the components and see if the new one is recognized. If not proceed to next step.

With you DVD drive connected
Press the <Windows> key and <Pause/Break> simultaneously then select Device manager/ Hardware tab then device manager depending on whether you have Vista/XP then look under DVD/CD or Optical drives to see if the device is showing up

If it is NOT there you have a problem with the Physical connection between your PC and the drive and will likely need to have an authorized service person perform a repair.

If it IS shown in device manager then you likely have a driver issue. Take note of the exact name given to it under device manager and post THAT here and we can direct you to where you can get the proper driver.

Hope this helps ya,

depends on what u want exactly:

1. if u want to recover the lost drive, that will take more time to figure out.
2. if u want to get it functional again u can make a recovery cd with the windows XP or Vista software on it,...when u put the cd in it will automatically take u through the setup process,...make sure u turn the laptop on with the cd already in the drive so that it will read it upon boot up, after that it will automatically start asking u what u want to do...

Installation stops

NTLDR is the NT Loader basically the instructions the bios needs to start your Operating system.
If it is not finding the NTLDR it could be due to a couple of things.

First thing I'd do is to check that the install disc is a full install disc for the OS and not an Upgrade disc.

If it IS a full OS disc then we need to enter the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) Usually done by hitting <Delete> or <F12> during boot up. Once in the BIOS there should be an option for "Boot order" we need to set it so that your optical drive (CD/DVD) is listed as the 1st entry in the boot order. press <F10> to save and exit. Put the CD/DVD in your drive and boot up your computer.

this should get you started with your installation.
If it does not, you likely have a faulty optical drive.
Please post your results so we can further assist you.

Thinkpad 2647 No sound on CD or DVD

Call IBM/Lenovo. For about $60, they will provide a complete set of "Recovery CDs" for the ThinkPad. That software will include a DVD-player and the correct sound-drivers. Or, check IBM's "support" web-site -- you may be able to download the correct drivers.

Creative Labs CT4870 - sound from DVD drive, not from internal or CD drive

Go to my computer. Right click on your CD-ROM. Choose "Properties". Choose the hardware tab. Again hit the properties button and again the properties tab. Click on "Enable digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device" and make sure there is a check mark in the box.
Click OK, then APPLY, then OK, and try play your audio CDs again.
You can use this so you don't need audio cables.
