Position of Touch Panel.

It's been awhile, but I think you go into the test mode then hit one of the hard keys (start, threader, reverse). I know there is a backdoor for this.
On newer Brothers you touch the screen and hold while powering on, but I'm not sure yours does it that way.

Recovery mode with out using the power button

An iPod Touch's "Recovery Mode" is for alleviating major operating system issues.
Recovery Mode rolls back your iPod's operating system, stripping problematic updates and downloads from the unit.
The goal of this total system recovery is to revert the iPod to a stable, usable version.
Before you use Recovery Mode, exhaust other troubleshooting methods.
In some cases, Recovery Mode is triggered automatically after a failed system update or system restore.
When it goes into Recovery Mode automatically, you cannot use your iPod until you complete the recovery process.
You can get your iPod Touch out of Recovery Mode using Apple's free iTunes software.

Turn on your computer and open iTunes.
If you are prompted to download any new iTunes updates, install the updates before proceeding.
Plug an iPod USB cable into your computer.
Do not plug the other end into your iPod Touch yet.

Turn off your iPod Touch. If the iPod Touch is already shut down, skip this step.
Press and hold the Home button on your iPod Touch, and plug the other end of the USB cable into your iPod Touch.
Release the Home button after you see a white USB icon and the iTunes logo appear on your iPod Touch's screen.
At this time, a pop-up should appear on your computer screen, explaining that the software has detected an iPod in Recovery Mode.
Click "OK."
Click on the iPod Touch from underneath the "Devices" heading on the left-hand side of your screen.
Click on the "Home" tab, and then click "Restore."
Once it's restored, your iPod Touch goes out of Recovery Mode and you can start using it again.
The restoration process takes a few minutes.
Do not disconnect your iPod Touch until a prompt appears, letting you know the system restored successfully.

Unlock screen

Is it locked by a password? Or something more terrible occurred to it? To unlock screen password, you can enter your iPod touch into DFU mode:

1. Plug in your iPod touch and turn it off. Hold down the "Home" and "Sleep/Wake" buttons for about twelve seconds.
You'll briefly see the silver Apple logo and then your touch will appear to turn back off.
2. Release the "Sleep/Wake" button but continue to hold the "Home" button until you see a message in iTunes stating that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode.

It has a locked in the screen

Your iPod touch shows a lock symbol on the top of the screen when it's in lock mode. This protects your iPod from being accidentally bumped on or off while you're focused on other things. Getting in and out of lock mode is somewhat intuitive, but can take a couple of tries the first time.

What Does Lock Mode Do? Lock mode keeps you from accidentally turning your iPod on or off. This helps save battery life if you have it locked while it's asleep. It prevents your music from turning off if you've put your iPod in your pocket. However. it's not an advanced security feature -- anyone can bring your iPod out of lock mode if they know how.
Lock Symbol When you see the lock symbol on the top of your iPod touch's screen, it always means that the iPod is in lock mode. There's no other reason for that symbol to appear. If it appears and your iPod is not in lock mode, just turn your iPod touch off and then on again and it should disappear. b> Entering Lock Mode b> Press the Sleep/Wake button on the top right of the iPod touch. You may need to hold it down for a couple of seconds. Don't hold it down for too long, as ten seconds or so will force a restart and turn your iPod completely off and then on again. b> Exiting Lock Mode b> Press the Sleep/Wake button again, and wait a moment for the screen to light up. You'll see a slider bar that prompts you to slide it to wake up and unlock the iPod touch. Put a finger or thumb on the solid part of the slider, then slide your finger to the right. This gesture is simple, but might take a couple of tries. You need to tap firmly on the slider, then keep contact with the iPod as you slide to the right. Hope this helps.

Getting message error -40 cant connect to itunes on my ipod 2g a1288

1. First, Open up iTunes, plug in your iPod Touch/iPhone to the CPU's USB port. Turn on your CPU's speaker and make sure it is loud enough that you can hear it.

2. Hold down the Home button (top left for iPod Touch and top right for the iPhone with the screen facing you) and the Power button (located on the front bottom of your iPod Touch/iPhone) simutaneously, until the screen goes black and the device turns off. (past the red slider/slide to power off screen)

3. Now let go of the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button. Your iPod Touch/iPhone should have turned off and the screen should not be on.

4. After around ~10-20 seconds, you will hear a noise (beep/ding) from your CPU as if it had just recognized a new hardware device, now iTunes should recognize it in DFU mode.

5. After iTunes recognizes the iPod Touch/iPhone, let go of the Home button otherwise it will go into recovery mode and you will have to do the entire DFU process over again.

6. You will know when you have put your iPod Touch/iPhone correctly into DFU mode when the display is blank and that you do not have anything on your device.

7. Restore ipod using itunes

How to make sure thermostat is off

The MODE button controls the On/OFF. Touch the Mode icon and watch the top right of the screen. That's where the ON/OFF will appear. If the fireplace or gas logs is ON, touch the Mode icon twice. Off will appear in the top right or the screen and the gas appliance's burner will turn OFF.

The Mode icon is also used to switch to different functions of the remote. To help you more I have included a downloadable link to your Owners Manual. You will be able to print it for future reference.

SCREEN WON,T STAY LIT UNLESS I TOUCH IT

You are simply in blackout mode. This is so at night you aren't blinded by the glow of a screen. Here are instructions right from the manual to turn on or off.

Blackout Mode On and Off
When Blackout mode is turned on, the monitor display will turn off to
reduce power consumption.
This additional power enhances the sound quality.
1 Touch [VISUAL] on the main source screen.
The VISUAL selection screen is displayed.
2 Touch [OFF].
The backlit-display portion goes out.
3 Touch [OFF] again to cancel the display backlight.
To make the setting, set to “Setting the VISUAL Touch Button” (page
34).
If any button on the unit is pressed during Blackout mode, the
function will be displayed for 5 seconds to show the operation before
returning to Blackout mode.
While the backlighting is turned off, the function indicator
