Hardware scan shows failed surface scan test, targeted read test & smart short self test timed out,how to fix these problems

These are problems that cannot be fixed, basically your hard drive is on the way out. Typically this is caused by drops, bumps, etc. while the machine is on.It has a SATA 2.5" 120gb 5400 RPM drive, I would suggest a larger 7200 rpm drive but it is up to you. You will also have to reinstall windows to the new hard drive.

2 HD's installed in Dell Studio XPS 8100. Keep getting error message that one of the drives has failed but when I do a scan with dell support center it shows everything OK. Dell customer support said the...

Have you configured the two disk-drives to "mirror" each other, i.e., write every block of data to both disk-drives? If so, then one of the two disk-drives has "failed" -- it is not recording the data,
and all your data is _only_ available from the _one_ disk-drive. So, you need to identify which of the two disk-drives has failed, and you need to buy a replacement disk-drive. Then, use the "mirroring" software to copy everything from the "good" disk-drive to the "new" disk-drive, to re-establish the "mirroring". Do this before your _second_ disk-drive _also_ fails!

Critical hard drive message followed immediately by shut down. Cannot re-boot will not load Windows or safe mode

If this message persists at each shutdown I suggest that you back up your data and get a new hard drive. Hard drives fail slowly, so you may still be able to squeeze out some life from the drive, but the bottom line is that you're playing russian roulette. It can go off when you least want it to.
After you get your critical data off the drive onto an external drive or burn them on a DVD, you can do a disk scan (Go to Windows Explorer, Right-click the hard drive, choose Tools and run the Scan Disk utility and have it check for errors. Or, you can also go to Start-Run, and type CMD and hit Enter in the small dialogue box. Then, in the new window type CHKDSK /f and hit Enter. This will scan and fix any errors it finds on the hard disk.
After you finish scanning you may want to check the mechanical parameters of the hard drive using a SMART Disk scanning utility eg. which is my favorite, but I have the full version, not the trial, but even this trial will do the job of notifying you if your hard drive has a mechanical problem or not.
If the ChkDsk utility finds problems and solves them, while the SMART scanner does not find any problems with your drive, then probably your hard drive only suffered from software-induced issues, and in this case you can relax and continue using the old hard drive, with regular monthly "CHKDSK /f" scans just to be on the safe side.

I used Diskwarrior on my Mac external hard drive got error 0,1613

You should STOP trying to run Disk Warrior. You drive is probably failing. What you need to do is boot the mac into Target mode and hook it up to another machine, copy off your important files ( start with the critical stuff first ).

Then after you've got everything, format and reinstall the OS. If you've got a copy of DriveGenius I' d do a hardware scan on the drive. It's probably toast.

Using Canoscan Lide 70. When trying to scan receive message "not enough room on target disk" When I reinstall Toolbox it works (for a while, then same repeats).

When you scan a picture, you send it to a "Target" folder which you can set up in your scan options or settings.

At a guess your current destination or target folder is getting to large for the hard drive that its registered on

You've 2 options, clean out the target drive or use the scan options to send your pictures to a new destination with plenty of space.

Error message: Can not scan. Not enough space on target disk

I have just cured this"not enough space on the target disc" on my set up.I had the problem from day one after buying scanner but learned to get around it.Today I went into Toolbox and opened settings and made a note of the target address. Then checked properties of the target folder and found there was 86mb in a space for 80mb.This was the default setting chosen by the installation programme. I went to my documents and made a new folder and called it Canoscan, clicked ok and it became the new target and the fault is gone. Hope it works for others.

LiDE 600DF - Unable to scan

Hi Peter

Have had the same problem, seems to come and go a bit... Quickest & easiest fix is to go to CanoScan toolboox > Settings then press the 'defauls' button at bottom... this sets everything back to factory settings and should fix your problem. Cheers.
