Need to remove starter pawl on Echo PB403T

I just bought the replacement recoil assembly for Echo PB403T. I double checked the part number and it IS correct, however although the recoil looks the same, the pawl that came with the new assembly is different than the one on the machine, so i need to switch out the pawl also. The pawl screws on to the shaft, but its seems theres no way to lock down the shaft to unscrew the old pawl, unless i lock the piston, which seems like alot of work to just switch out a recoil assembly. Any ideas how to remove the starter pawl. ?

SOURCE: how do I remove the clutch assembly from an Echo Cs-400 chainsaw

Turns out there is a reverse thread on the clutch hub (the "Y" shaped piece). I poked around some on the web and got some ideas, but they called for a special tool that it made by echo that fits in around the legs of the hub, and once you've prevented the crankshaft from turning by blockiing the piston, it turns (clockwise) with a wrench. I didn't have that tool, nor did I want to spend $19.95 to buy one, so I stuck a plastic toothbrush handle into the exhaust port to block the piston from moving, and used an open-end wrench just wide enough to fit over one of the legs in the "Y" shaped clutch hub. Then I took a large crescent wrench and closed it over the open-end wrench, right down next to the hub. So, if the saw is lying on its side, with the clutch facing up, the open-end wrench is inserted straight down straddling one leg of the clutch hub, and the crescent wrench is positioned horizontally gripping the bottom end of the open ended wrench to provide a "handle" for leverage. Holding the saw securely somehow (I used my elbow), left hand gripping the open-end wrench and pushing it down into the clutch so it won't slip out, I used my right hand to provide the clockwise motion on the crescent wrench as a lever/handle. Clutch popped free after a few seconds of pressure.

Hope this experience helps someone.

This does not sound good, start by removing the starter, try to turn the engine by hand turning the flywheel, move it back and forth incase there is somthing trapped between the flywheel, if you cannot turn the engine this way, then somthing bad has happened inside the engine, it will now require a strip down to find out exactley what has happened

Pawls don't catch on rancher 455

The starter pawls are held on with small springs. If the springs are broken or installed incorrectly, this can happen. I would suggest replacing the springs and maybe the pawls. Check the recoil assembly to make sure the issue is not with the recoil assembly.

Where do you find the serial number of a echo PB403T

Model and serial number are underneath the recoil starter, on the engine block. Tip the blow on it's non-engine side and look right above the tank from underneath the blower.

The pull cord hasn't snapped it just wont recoil! is this an easy fix?

Sounds like the starter spring has broken, remove the three torx screws securing the starter and remove the starter, prise off the r clip holding the pulley and pawl on ( note the orientation of the clip on the pawl ) remove the pulley, the spring is in a cassette, remove the cassette and replace with new, refit the pulley, make sure the pulley locates properly into the hook on the starter spring, re fit the pawl and r clip, enter the cord into the cut a way in the side of the pulley, now wind the pueey around to tention the spring.

Have a ECHO gas trimmer SRM 2100 wont start. coulld it be the fly wheel

If it doesn't turn over when you pull the rope it could be in the starter assembly or the flywheel where the starter pawls engage it. If it turns over then you need to check for fuel, spark, air and compression.

On my echo weed trimmer the rope broke on the starter. i took it off and the spring came out. how do you reconnect all the workings?

Recoil starters can be very dangerous when coming Apart!!, And During Reassembly!! Please do not attempt unless you are a qualified and certified Echo technician!

The spring of the recoil is what pulls your rope back in, It is of high energy and can harm you during Assembly, if you fail on any one detail. The most common injury is to the eyes! Use proper eye safety when performing repairs on recoil starters!

Cord is locked, or maybe its the motor. Its an Echo PB260L Backpack

This is easy enough to check. There are 4 screws that secure the recoil starter to the engine. Remove these 4 screws and remove the starter assembly. Pull on the rope and see if the starter is operating properly. If not, go to your local Echo dealer and get a new one...they are about $30. Also try to turn the starter cup by hand to see if the engine is locked up. If the engine is locked up, remove the spark plug and try to turn the starter cup again. If it is still locked up, then the repairs would cost more than a new blower.
Good luck!

Echo trimmer srm-230 pull string to start trimmer is stuck. I try pulling on it and it only comes out about an inch.

The pull string is probably tangled up. There are usually vents which enable you to see into the machines pull string assembly. Loosen the fasteners and pull off the cover exposing the pull string. You can unwind and untangle and then it should recoil perfectly. If that does not work continue to dismantle the pull string assembly because you probably have a broken starter pawl which is located on the back of the pull string assembly.

Echo pb413h blower removing starter pawl assembly and installing new one.

I looked on ECHO website for serial#0200-02999. the part number is 17720206210. you don't need a pneumatic tool to remove it but it is nice to have. I would not use the high setting. But you should be able to use just a socket to take the old one off and put a new one on.
Good Day.
