SOURCE: Hello, I'm trying to get an old Coleman Maxa 5000

First make sure you have fresh gas in the tank, as old gas can cause a 'no run' condition. Once you have fresh gas in the tank, make sure the gas flows freely all the way to the carb by removing the fuel hose from the carb inlet & checking for good flow (bad shut-off valve or obstructed hose by debris could cause same problem). Once you are sure that good, fresh gas is going into the carb w/o obstruction, remove the lower bowl from the carb - carefully - do not lose ANY parts, starting with the washer on the bolt. With fuel flow 'ON', fuel should flow freely when this bowl is removed, so shut off fuel valve in the hose. Now, if you carefully remove the bolt / brass tube from the center of this bowl area (center of plastic float) - remove bolt downward, like you would a lightbulb from the ceiling - this bolt should have several holes in the side, they are probably clogged, so unclog them with a needle or wire, wipe clean, and reinstall. That probably just solved all your problem.... if not, you likely will want to replace the carb completely, as it is not very expensive, and will surely solve your problem. *** Be careful with gas fumes !!! ***

SOURCE: Oil for Coleman Powermate 5000 PM0545305.03

My answer:

First of all - Almost every 4-stroke Genset engine out there should use a minimum 10-30 or else a 10-40 oil blend tops. Best NEVER to use just a straight weight, as in a 30 or 40 weight, as that would be way too "high viscous" at colder temps and could destroy the engine due to overheating at MAX Genset LOADS!

Next - If the Genset is indeed brand new then you need to use the proper fuel in it, as certain mfr's require different fuel blends (such as with certain B&S - Briggs & Stratton - engines), and those engines are set up that way to run on that blend alone. Using the wrong gas blend could damage the engine.

You really need to get a factory Users Manual for your Genset there and read it through thoroughly!

If it has gas in it now (and hasn't run in 3 years?) chances are the whole gas tank, and fuel lines, and Carb as well will need to be cleaned out from contaminated fuel - as there definitely is gum and varnish built up everywhere in those fuel delivery areas esp the most important component - the Carb! Been there - seen that - cleaned that! So I KNOW for FACT.

As for the OIL LEVEL - that is fairly simple - as all you do is unscrew (or in some cases pull out) the dipstick, and check the oil for proper level on the stick as well as cleanness (2 finger test like with car oil), and if it's even black or a silvery color then it definitely needs to be changed out NOW! Refill with fresh oil and your done there.

Check the Air Cleaner for cleanness as well, and service the filter if a foam element, or replace it if a paper element.

If the fuel tank has an in-line fuel line filter and it looks dirty change it out as well. Esp if the gas tank is made out of metal.

Check the spark plug for proper gap, and heat range, and burn color if the Genset has been run already. Should be a nice "light tan" color. If dark and wet - then you have Carb flooding problems.

That about covers it...

Anything else problem wise feel free to ask me here in post follow-up and I'll be glad to answer it for you.

Please post me a reply as to the found problem there, and the resolve to it by following my recommendations above. Also please rate my troubleshooting fix as well.

Keep me posted and I'll follow up as well.

Best regards,

Frank

How do i start a powermate 5000

choke it and pull the cord, if it has set for a long time, you may need to pull the spark plug and put a drop or 2 of gas in the cyilinder, reinstall the plug andwire and it should start.

What's the best choke setting for starting a cold generator

Full choke to start, open choke partially immediately the engine starts to where the motor runs smoothly, continue opening as soon as you can while keeping the engine running smoothly. Be sure to open fully before leaving the unit, running it with the choke partially on can cause a rich fuel condition which tends to wash the oil off the cylinder walls and it also dilutes the oil with gasoline.

I tried to start my new coleman powermate 6250/5000,

Do check the oil after it has tried to start. Low oil cutoff would certainly cause the problem. Look for the "lost" fuel shutoff valve... there usually is one.

Coleman 5000 watt generator Tecumseh 10 hp engine. Surging r.p.m. Carburetor has been gone through 2 times, and still not correct. Any information will help!!!

it's running lean.....try resetting the choke partially when it begins to surge.....not completely closed, but enough to richen the fuel mixture (that's all a choke does btw..)
if that helps or clears the problem, your carb is outta whack.....cheaper to buy a new carb than keep taking back into the shop.

I bought a used coleman powermate 5000 generator, I replaced the spark plug and fuel filter, it finally started up,it would only run in the "choke" position it ran about 10 minutes and then shut down, I...

What brand of engine & horsepower is it?Also about how long was it stored or last time it was run? The reason I ask is if it was stored with gas in it & a fuel stabilizer wasn't added to it,your primary jet is plugged in the carburetor(reason it will only run while choked).
