Question about Alienware Area 51 256MB Video Card 35G1P5310-10 M5790

1 Answer

Where can i find instructions on how to remove and replace the video card in an alienware area 51 m5790 laptop?

The only instructions dell supplies have no pictures. There are places for the pictures, but the pictures don't load. When I right-click and click on view pictures, a screen says there's an error with the web page.

Thanks, Max, but I was already there. My hardware looks a bit different. I read on the Dell site that you have to remove the heat sink, but the pictures in the instructions don't show (nor can I "reload" them) so I don't know exactly how to do that or even what it looks like. I can build and take apart a desktop computer but know very little about laptops. I did upgrade the ram and hard drive in my alienware, but this is a little more tricky and there were no instructions with the new card.

The heat sink is the long metal device that is one piece attached to the fan and CPU.It should be stright forward, remove the back panel the heat sink will be obvious.

Yes, I did see that and I took the screws out of everything on and around it, and also that screw by the fan, but it is stick to something below it and I don't want to break anything. The computer works, but the video is bad and I don't want it to damage anything else. That's why I want to replace the video card. I'll try again later this week. Thanks for trying to help me.

It's stuck to the CPU with thermal paste, which you will have to replace during the assembly.

So, it's OK to pry it off? I was afraid I'd break something.

With caution, of course. It may pull out the CPU as well. Just be gentle. The vedios give general idea of the procedure:

Step 1: Make sure it's plugged in. (Don't laugh please, you'd be surprised).

Step 2: Make sure you turned it on. (Repeat of Step 1 comment goes here).

Step 3: Beg, borrow or buy a replacement power supply and test using it.

Step 4: Disconnect everything from the system board except the RAM, the CPU (and fan), the power supply and the video card. Test. If it works, add one thing back at a time until it stops found the problem.

Step 5: If disconnecting all but the core components still fails, remove the RAM, reinsert one at a time and test each independently.

Step 6: If that doesn't work, take it to a qualified technician as it's probably the mainboard, or CPU.

Alienware area 51 card reader not recognizing 64gb exfat sd card

I would check you have all the latest updates for your Vista installation as I know for some versions of Windows extra updates are necessary for exfat support.

Does the SD card read; is it accessible; in other devices?

I've got a Dell Alienware Area-51 Gaming Desktop Computer (Intel Core i7 930 QC 1TERABYTE/12GB) (DPPCPW11) PC Desktop, I've had it for about a month now. I hardly ever turn it on and now for some...

Yep sounds like a bad PSU. There should be a warranty on this thing so I would call Dell and tell them the problem and they should be able to get the problem fixed for ya, the only thing is that you may have to ship it to them cause I don't think they'll take your word for it. But I would definitely call Dell at least you'll know your options then.

I have an Alienware m5790 laptop. I want to upgrade the motherboard/video card (combined, thanks Alienware) but I don't know what I should use. Anybody have any suggestions?

Generally, laptops motherboard/video cards are upgraded by replacing the system. The motherboard for that system is proprietary to Alienware and a 3rd party MB will not work. From what I can find so far, Alienware only had 1 MB for that system.
