Replacing the batteries
The thermometer is supplied with two 1.5 V type AA (LR 06). For best
performance, we recommend Duracell
®
alkaline batteries.
Insert new batteries when the battery symbol appears on the display.
Open the battery compartment. Remove the batteries and replace with
new batteries, making sure the poles are in the right direction.
Slide battery door back until it snaps in place.
To protect the environment, dispose of empty batteries at
appropriate collection sites according to national or local
regulations.

Simply press the small recessed button (a small triangle is pointing it ) directly above the battery door with something slender like a ballpoint pen or a toothpick, while pushing the battery door down, away from the thermometer.

battery is exhausted. Dispose of the thermometer as the battery is
non-replaceable. Be aware of any local regulations concerning disposal
of this product. The battery cover is sonic-welded to the main housing of the thermometer, the battery is well sealed inside the thermometer to reduce the risk of being swallowed by children."

If you're not looking specifically for temp to cook specific food items, rather what lo, med low, med etc mean . . . from the packing insert lo is 185 degrees, med low is 225 degrees, med is 300 degrees, med hi is 375 degrees and hi is 415 degrees. I just purchased this item yesterday.
