Question about Jeep 2002 Grand Cherokee LAREDO
It will start, then i drive it and it will drive long distances fine. Once it shuts off past five minutes it wont start again. It will turn over but not start. If it sits for more than a hour then it will start normal. Also sometimes when i starts it spits and sputters it hesitates to stay running, so it did this to me today, and i opened the gas cap and it stalled right away, and would turn over but not start. Could someone please help, i dont have the money for a mechanic, i would like to try and fix it myself. Please if you know, help me. I am at my wits end. Thank you so very much.

Take the air inlet hose off where it enters the throttle body and take a look at the throttle plates. It is likely that they’re dirty and have a build-up of carbon deposits. That is the most common cause for stalling that we see in the shop for your vehicle. Sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning to cure the stalling problem. There is an idle speed setting on your Jeep, but to check and/or perform this service step requires the use of a computer scan tool for your vehicle. If the cleaning doesn’t help ask a repair facility to check and reset, if needed, the minimum idle speed on your Jeep.

Quite possible you have a bad ignition coil. As coil heats up it breaks down and will not return to normal till it cools down. Check for spark the next time this happens. If spark is weak or not there, it warrants testing or replacement.

Definite symptoms of a bad catalytic converter. A smelly exhaust and loss of power are early signs of catalytic converter problems. You may notice increased heat on the floor boards as well, When the converter goes bad, it heats up. Hope this answers your question. All the best!
