DCR-HC15E Condensation error - cannot clear error and insert tape

My son tells me he was using the camera while on a recent holiday in a coastal environment when the camera gave a message to eject the tape. He did this and since then he/we have been unable to re-insert a tape and the camera reports the condensation error.

It has been over a week now with no success and we have tried all the suggestions to try and clear the error, including the one from wiz 'eagle338' on this site, but the error still exists.

I work in the technical field myself but not with video equipment so do have some technical experience.

Any tips on anything else to try or check for this error would be greatly appreciated. Could the moisture sensor itself be faulty or dirty? Where is the sensor located so I can check and/or clean it?

Thanks in anticipation for your help.....

It appears I've been trying to fix the wrong problem with my camcorder as it appears the problem is not condensation error at all.

While searching the internet last night I located the service manual which gave me a list of the error codes. The error the camera is reporting is C:31:40 which translates to 'FG fault when starting drum'. The corrective action stated is 'load tape again, and perform operation from the beginning', which does not work for me as the error is reported whenever I attempt to insert a tape.

Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.....

I am able to remove the tape OK. The problem is I am unable to insert the tape. The camera tape mechanism starts to load the cassette but it only travels a short distance then stops, beeps and reports the error I stated in my previous post which is C:31:40. This translates to 'FG fault when starting drum' from the list of error codes provided in the service manual. I obtained a copy of the manual last night.

Thanks for trying to help so far.....

    Hi ginko,

Thanks for trying to fix the problem with my camcorder. Whilst your advice did not specifically fix the problem, I think you were right with your thought that there may be a problem with the drive mechanism for the drum.

I contacted a Sony authorised repairer today about the problem and they advised to try and remove all power from the unit (as you did) for an hour and power it up again using the AC adaptor. While it was powered down, I probed around the drum with a cotton bud and it did appear to be stuck. It did seem to free up again while probing and when power was re-applied (via the AC adaptor), the tape was accepted but it then reported a different 'drum error'. A few more trys however seems to have fixed the problem and all is working again - for now anyway.

Thanks for trying anyway and your offer of help is appreciated. I guess we would have got there in the end.

Have you tried to spin the drum with a Qtip or the eraser on a pencil? If you use the pencil method be gentle. It says if there was condensation on the drum the tape would have stuck to it. Maybe something stuck to it? Or have you pushed the reset button to clear memory? Do a reset with the camera on after spinning the head to check it for movement. Hope this helped

Hit your camera several times with a flat hand (bottom, tape side). Its strange but the problem will be solved. On internet I found maybe 10 or 15 other people who did the same. For all of them this worked fine. try several times as once it will start working it will not show the error again.
thanks.

It indicates that the allignment of the internal parts has been moved from its orignal position so this problem.just tap the sides of the camera for couple of minutes and try checking it again.

To start do all removing battery and removing tape procedure.

try inserting a different tape and rewinding the whole tape, or forwarding it to the end.

If it still does not start with any tape (try different ones) then there is a fault on the gears that move the drum, but that is rare.

Ensure well that tape is getting well in position inside, and that door is closing well, and that is not the tape that you are using that is usually the problem.

1. Open the tape cover fully until it clicks open.
2. Turn the camcorder on to "VCR Mode."
3. With the cover still open and the camera in "VCR mode," take out the battery.
4. Put the battery back in--out should pop your tape.

Camera will not insert tape. Mechanism works OK without tape. Sony dcr-hc42

A C31:40 error indicates that the drum (the spinning video head) is either not spinning or is not supplying a signal to the main computer to tell the computer it is spinning. It could be a bad drum or a loose connection. It will likely take a qualified technician to verify the diagnosis.
