Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll through all of your devices

or for Windows 7 click start right click on computer select properties in the left pane device manager scroll through all of your devices.

If you see a yellow question / exclamation mark ? ! or a Red X you will need to update the drivers for this device right click select update driver/reinstall driver software.

If you can see your usb device but its not working scroll to Ports(Com&Ltd) right click to update driver

If you computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it.

or you might have to download them

Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours.

http://download.cnet.com/slimdrivers-free/3000-18513_4-75279940.html

Windows XP/Vista/7/8

This might take some time being a freeware driver solution

Note: The Driver program will find all of your outdated drivers

This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.

Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.

The ticking noise might be a dirty hard drive with the reader arm skipping across the platters of the hard drive.

You could give it a firm tap on the top of the hard drive to free the reader arm also run the chkdsk utility on it.

Click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

You might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box

Hope this helps

SOURCE: My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

SOURCE: External hard drive shown as portable disk and does not work

hi

i think the hard drive is ageing,

if you are past warranty try to open up the casing and try to see if you can connect the HDD to connect individually else where (like with another casing or Laptop PC) if still not connecting then the problem is with the HDD

else the problem may be with the casing

cheers
pls rate if this was any help

SOURCE: Toshiba StorE ALU 3.5" external HDD stops out of the blue.

Toshiba could only replace my HD after destroying the data on it, So I just bought a separate empty HD casing instead and opened the Toshiba casing and took out the Western Digital Harddisk. The harddisk was perfectly working, It seems that the Toshiba controller in their casing got messed up. (Never a Toshiba for me, because by solving the problem myself in the appropriate manner I lost their useless warranty).

SOURCE: I have a Toshiba HDD2190 C DC +5V 0.7A 40 GB

In general, you need to install the correct drivers for the enclosure, not for the hard disk. Seeing as you have XP Pro, this is probably unnecessary though.

Also, 0.7A is 700 mA, and this exceeds the USB port maximum current which is 500 mA.

Most (not all!) laptop drives will run even if under a slight undercurrent, but this depends on USB port electronics and enclosure electronics.

Chances are that you won't be able to run the disk unless you plug it into an externally powered USB hub supplying at least 750 mA per port. The 100-500 mA supplied by your PC's USB port is enough to power the enclosure electronics and the host controller, but not enough to get the HD to spin properly. As a result, the HD can not be initialised and the enclosure will report an error.

Some hard disk enclosures come with a "USB Y Cable" or "double power cable" which joins two USB ports to get double the current, and can support HD up to 1.0A. If your enclosure comes with one of them, try that first.

My lenovo z61m computer is going to sleep every three minutes when the above message appears. this problem started when I started using a 500 GB toshiba external hard drive

disconnect the external drive and see if it still happens. If it does, the timing may be coincidence...check the main hard disk for bad sectors.
If this solves the problem, have the external drive checked for bad sectors.
Also with the external drive disconnected, open up a command prompt (or go START, RUN) and type sfc /scannow
this will check the system files for errors and replace any corrupted ones.
NOTE: you will need you OS CD when you go to do this.

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.
