Tried using an Ethernet cable, still says update failed
I had the same problem.
Confirm that the receiver is linked by wire (I think that's best than Wireless) and reset the microprocessor (page 49 of the manual: Unplug the power; than, plug the power while pressing Volume UP and DOWN on the main unit; when the power indicator lights white, release the buttons - "Initialized" appears on the screen). When Quick Set up appears, run it to connect to the Network. After the network is connected, upgrade the firmware (see page 14 of the manual for that).
That worked fine for me.

if your modem has an ethernet connection the drivers should be on the disk provided by the internet provider
control panel admistrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down network adapters +expand Ethernet driver right click update driver,disable,uninstall or select properties general you can trobleshoot or driver to update,rollback or uninstall
