Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
You seem like the one that might be able to help me out. I too repair consoles of all types along with hardware and software mods. However this one has got me. This is my personal PS3, like many others I turned it on, started up Bad Company and then it popped and shut off. After checking power to the outlet, to the power cable and it wouldn't turn back on, common sense told me that it was the power supply. I had dealt with power supplies pleantly with the orginal xbox. So I bought a used one for it off of ebay. Installed it and now I get a red light, as soon as I touch the power button I get a green light then a second later the whole thing shuts down without lights. I turn off the main switch wait a minute and it'll do the same thing all over again (red light, green light, nothing).
I have read many post of this happing as well. So now I'm left wondering if this power supply has a fault too. I see that these switching power supplies have many different types of faults. I haven't ruled out the rest of the hardware, but without knowing wether or not I have a good power supply in hand I don't want to look away from it yet. If I do get my hands on a good PSU, I will take some readings to build a tester for them. Any insight you might be able to give will be greatly appreciated.
There are two different things that i could think of that could be causing this problem. One being the main switch itself. try replacing that. and two the ps3 like almost everything does uses a disk based hdd and if it is dead or shorting out it will instantly turn off so you might want to check that.

Tips for a great answer:
It is basically a failure at the hardware level and is
known to have a huge impact.
Some of the theories doing the rounds on
what causes this specific error include power supply issues, lack of cooling or
heat dissipation leading to
over heating or
drive errors. Lack of heat dissipation results in a hardware failure on
Improper power supply is another primary
reason for the occurrence of YLOD. The general theory is that the console beeps
whilst throwing the yellow light and then the console gives out a red light
with the primary reason being over heat.
The probable reasons for this could be due to the
various temperatures the system would experience whilst playing games and
improper vents to provide the requisite cooling. Under such circumstances, it
is recommended to leave the system unused until the heat is dissipated and the
system cools down completely before turning it on.
Once you face the error, you have a few options
to choose from:
• Buy a new PS3
• Get your PS3 repaired by Sony
• Get your Ps3 Repairs by
There are a few temporary things you can do, but the over all will not last very long unless you open up your system... Your system needs to be cleaned.
