Hi My toshiba CX36H60 has a problem -- no picture but sound is good. what could be the issue and how to rectify it. Please suggest.

As sound output is ok, main board is correct with respect to sound output, video IF and ther stages. The fault lies on the horizontal output section. It may be LOT fault. Check it further for horizontal oscillator stage, and horizontal output stage. Check the collector voltage at the horizontal driver transistor. If you have a frequency meter, check the frequency of that point. It should be somewhere near 15625Hz. If the frequency there is Ok, then proceed to horizontal output stage. Check the horizontal output transistor. If it seems to be faulty, replace it with similar type and number. If the replaced horizontal output transistor heats abnormally within seconds after swich on the set, surely LOT has troubel. Replace it also with same model mumber and type.

The screen is dark and no sound.says it is on standby

most likely it has a power supply or horizontal/high voltage problem. These sets have so many safety circuits that is really hard to say without some hands on troubleshooting. This set is definately worth a check out fee. They have a good picture when working. Thanks

This is very vague. There are a multitude of fault conditions that can cause this. Most often in the Sony CRT sets it is a high voltage and or scan failure. It is also possible that the CRT is no longer able to have emission.

The set would have to be properly diagnosed to have a definate answer.

No picture, buzzing sound

It sounds like the horizontal output transistor may be shorted....Can you feel any static charge on the face of the pix tube?

The high pitched sound is probably comming from the power supply, possibly due to its trying to drive voltage into a shorted component in the high voltage deflection circuits. You may be lookng at about a $250 repair. If it has been used a lot and its picture quality didn't knock your socks off, I would replace it with a HDTV set. A 37 inch LCD from Toshiba might be a good place to start and should do nicely for you.

Thin horizontal line

Defective components in vertical deflection and output circuit inclusive of vertical output device, coupling capacitors, and yoke connectors. Passive devices such as electrolytic capacitors, coils, and resistors to/from power supply circuits. If your tele is more than 10 years old dump it and get a newer product. $100 USD is a fair price to diagnose and attempt service, depending on age and configuration. Older products may not have replacment parts available at any repair cost. There may be a pot for adjusting the vertical size. If so, it may be dirty. If you can find it, try adjusting it which could clean it. BE CAREFUL -voltages are very high.
