Question about Dyson DC18 all floors Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

Open Question

Dyson DC18 will not turn on

When I recently plugged it in there was a little puff of smoke that came from the outlet - Now nothing happens when I press the on/off switch - Is there a fuse or reset switch somewhere to check?

I have the same issue. Was cleaning with the wand tool in the basement and turned the machine off to grab something else. When I came back, the machine won't turn on anymore. Tried various outlets, checking for blockages (to see if there was an auto-off) and short of breaking out the screwdriver, I can't seem to find a way to bring it back to life. :( :( ... and the service area is closed.

SOURCE: Dyson upright

hi this is an expensive repair and would probably be cheaper to buy new one the problem you have is with the motor bearings seizing its expensive to repair because when dyson made thes vacs they were made so you need special tool to take them apart so replacing the motor would require calling a dyson bloke out as i found out with mine when my switch failed i tried removing and replacing myself but when the bloke came out he used a thin piece of metal down the side of switch to press button to release switch after i payed him to do this 2 months later i got your problem and called them back they tryed selling me new one as the repair was 50 quid more than a new vac.
Hope this is some help sorry i couldnt give you good news

Same problem here. We noticed a loss of suction for about 5 minutes and the suction stopped. Beater bar still rotates but ZERO suction.

SOURCE: hi my dyson dc18 has great suction from wand but

My Dyson dc18 had the same symptoms. The wand worked well and the floor bar had no suction. After removing pieces & shoving my fingers into the machine (no blockage) I found the suction pipe rotates between two positions (floor and wand). It looks like a piece of plastic broke on the outside housing, so it no longer rotates positions when the wheels are raised or lowered. My son found we can move the suction by sliding a finger into the mechanism behind the wheel cover, and rotating the plastic piece clock-wise or counter clock-wise until it locks into position. It's a big pain but it works for now. I wish I could find a replacement piece online. Patty

Where is the motor on the dc18

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC18 is making an unusual sound along with a change in pickup performance, it's likely you have a blockage somewhere. Our online Support guide should help you locate and clear this:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc18/dc18-all-floors/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual/how-to-wash-filters/wand-suction

If your vacuum's filter hasn't been washed recently it's also a good idea to do this. DC18 has one washable filter engineered to last the lifetime of the machine in normal use. This should be washed at least once every 3-6 months using cold water without detergent as shown in the video below. Make sure the filter is completely dry before replacing it - this could take at least 12 hours:

Please note, the post-filter is engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum without maintenance, and should not be washed as this could cause damage.

Following these steps should resolve the issue, but if you would like some further help from our experts, please give us a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Why rainbow vac wont turn on

There are numerous reasons. If there was no smoke or burning smell, first try a different outlet. Then you can try wiggling the cord and check cord for damage, if you can get it to start and it turns off again cord is loose or damaged. Try the switch, sometimes switch wears out, if it is not making a click sound or is very loose it may be the switch. The most common reason for an E series to not start after working just fine is a broken actuator on the water basin or missing from the bottom of the vacuum. There is a raised part on the water basin that depresses a little black plastic actuator on the bottom of the vacuum. This is a safety switch to make sure the water basin is there so the vacuum will turn on. You can try pressing in on that and trying to start your vacuum, if it starts you will need to check and see if the part is broken off of your basin or if the little black actuator is missing. You can see pictures here.

Cannot reconect hose at base dyson dc8

Hi Joei, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC18's hose should clip back onto the machine without difficulty. It just pushes into place, and you should hear and feel a click as it locks securely. You might find the tips in our Support guide useful: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc18/dc18-allfloors/diagnosis-root-menu/dc18tilterwashvid/flo-dc18-gen-wand-suction/flo-dc18-gen-wand-suction-main/flo-dc18-gen-remove-the-wand-from-hose/redirect-to-flo-dc18-gen-check-the-hose/flo-dc18-gen-check-the-hose

If you'd like further guidance on reattaching it, please give the Dyson customer Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA), or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Dyson slim dc18 turned off

Hi there,

If your DC18 shut off during use, it may have overheated due to a blockage, or because the filter needs a wash. Once the machine cools down, you should find it runs again - but to prevent this from reoccurring, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://support.dyson.co.uk/support/dc18/dc18-all-floors/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual/how-to-wash-filters/wand-suction

In normal use, the filter should be washed at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 12 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

Best wishes,
