SOURCE: Grinding Noise
If it's metallic sound you are loosing teeth on a gear or two. This is caused by lack of lubricant or simply fatigue of the material of the gears. Don't use it, you can get metal flakes in your food.
Take it in to a repair shop and have it fixed. The money spent is well worth it because if done correctly will last another 12 years.

I had a persistant grinding noise about 30 seconds after the printer finished printing. It's been going on about 2 months. I did one thing which seemed to work. So try opening the cover on the back of the machine by lifting upward on the gray lever in the middle of the back of the machine. Leave this cover open during and after printing. The grinding noise went away.

If its beeping, normaly means something tied to motherboard is going out. Most times this is just simply the internal battery going bad, (if so equiped) but could be a port like a usb or ethernet. I couldn't tell you wich it is with out getting into it myself.
