Sometimes on the LG440G, after dialing a number, just before it connects, I get a notice on the screen for just a second that reads Call divert. What is that? And does my call go through?

I understand that it means you have Divert Activated probably from Settings - Calls. So, if call is not going through, it is diverted to another number. So open menu item and check this setup but be careful. First time I manpulated my phone I did something to this function and all my calls were diverted. Function is not explained in manual so finally I made a factory reset to solve the issue and regain control of calls..

How to turn of call divert on a lg 440g when I make outgpoing calls, its not in settings

That's another way to say call forwarding.
Go to page 49 of this manual regarding call forwarding.
Read that section.

Getting this message .call divert set. what is it and how do i get rid of ot ???

When you make a call it will say this As while your in a call it will need to divert calls to voicemail as you cannot answer two calls at once..
Don't worry about this, If its Set for always diverting then In settings > Call or network settings you can disable all diverts.
If its just appearing when making a call then ignore it, Its perfectly normal.

My n95 keeps making an engaged tone and saying 'diverts active'? how do i stop it?

Its showing Active diverts because your call diverts is active. May be you have set a call diverts where if you are unreachable your calls gets transfered to voice mail. To deactivate Active diverts. Go to Tools -> Settings -> Call Diverts -> Options -> Cancel all diverts
Hope this helps.

When calling in my phone always says your call has been forwarded to an automated messaging system

If you can make calls OK, then it's possible that you have the phone set to divert all calls - you can check this with

*#21#<send>

If it comes back with some message like "Divert active" or "Divert all calls: ON", then clear it using

##21#<send>
