Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional

1 Answer

How can the product key be wrong??

I just purchased a copy of Windows xp pro, SP2 to load onto my mac. It's an authentic copy, original wrapping never opened. I HAVE the porduct key but when I entered it it said it was invalid! SO I tried the telephone option, it accepted my activation number only to come back saying the product is invalid. I'm stumped! How can it be invalid?? It's a brand-new never opened authentic, cost me a bundle, copy of Windows!

I doubt this matters, but it's a rare English copy of Windows intended for Asian distribution. I was lucky to find an English version in Korea.

I tried talking with a representative but she barely spoke English :/ All she would say it "cd not fine"

'm going to try re-installing, but I really don't think its counterfeit.  The cd has all the holograms on it like it should. and it was sealed with the booklet.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow at a computer store, but I'm unlikely to find anyone else with a copy of asia-only English windows xp pro :/  I'm in nowheresville in South Korea.

I used produkey to confirm the true product key.  I'm beginning to wonder if the seller somehow used the key before selling the program.  Could this result in it coming back as invalid?  (Normally I would think it would say it's already in use)

Thanks I think you are right.  It was purchased from a store, but through an online site (it's near impossible to buy software from actual stores in Korea, even the computer shops get them from second parties online)

So basically it's an authentic cd, but someone stole the serial.  wonderful :(

Assuming that you are minding the caps and other odd characters when you enter the key, it is possible that you have a counterfeit copy. I don't know if you have access to a computer store, but I would find one and have them look up the registry on that product.

You might seek out someone with a similar product and see if their key will unlock it.

I would be extremely surprised if this turned out to be a valid copy of XP. Shrink wrap is easy to do. Someone has already used your product key which Microsoft has now registered to a different computer.

And yes, when you submit it the message is that it is invalid which means already in use by another computer.

Microsoft never gives the error message "this product code is already in use". They only say it is invalid.

I've installed XP tons of time and even had a few times where the license belonged to another computer. When that happened, the invalid error message is what I got.

I'll make another guess and say you did not buy XP from a computer store, but instead from an individual. A reputable computer store should be able to help you with your problem if you bought from one.
