Open Question

I am not getting a wireless signal from a belkin wireless router.

I can connect through a wire but the wireless light is not on and I am not getting any signal that the router is there from my laptop. It was there fine 2 days ago. I have reset the router to the factory settings and set it up again and there still is no signal. Help?

A couple of items to check -- these will not fix the issue but may isolate the problem.

Turn all machines on before the test and do not turn off until after

On at least one wired computer that is working and maybe all wireless computers I want you to do the following

Click Start then All Programs then Accessories then Command Prompt

In the window that opens type

ipconfig /all

press enter then record all of the following for each adapter

  • adapter
  • IP address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway
  • one or more DNS addresses
The back in the window enter the following command using the default gateway from the wired connection (your router address)

ping (default gateway)

you will either get 4 timeouts -- the connection fails or 4 messages with elapsed times generally measured in ms or milliseconds.

What you are looking for in the above
Good entries base
x.y.x match each other if subnet mask is right
u should be unique for the network
Wired IP address x.y.z.u not 0.0.0.0 may be 192.168.0.u
SubNet Mask ?.?.?.? assuming 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway x.y.z.? not 0.0.0.0 may be 192.168.0.1
DNS addresses ?.?.?.? not 0.0.0.0
where at least one is not zero.

Then wireless entries should be
Wired IP address x.y.z.u not 0.0.0.0 may be 192.168.0.u
SubNet Mask same as wired
Default Gateway same as wired
DNS addresses same as wired
If these are wrong there is a configuration error either in the router or wireless adapters depending on how you want your network setup.

each connected adapter wired and each wireless should also
successfully ping the default gateway or router address

If the ipconfig is right and the wired config has successful pings, then every wireless adapter that fails has a wireless config issue.

If you are willing to work through this let me know and reply with information in a comment to this issue.

If could be that you were unable to reset the router properly. You have to make sure that the router is on while pressing and holding the reset button using a paper clip. the reset button is usually found at the back of the router, then you may have to reconfigure the settings again.

you can also manually access the router page for you to change the settings.

Its dead Jim.

I had one of those. Dead.

You can try hitting the reset button. Looking at the back there should be a small hole with a tiny button. Use a staightened paper clip or other object to hold it in for at least 30 seconds. That should set it back to factory defaults.

Doing that brought mine back to life momentarily , but it kept going out after a couple of hours and I had to repeat the process until it finally gave up the ghost for good.

SOURCE: Belkin 54G won't connect to the internet

Are you sure your modem is giving a WAN IP from your ISP? Try power-cycling your modem with your router unplugged then bring up your router next, if you havent tried that already... After that try connecting your modem directly to a PC and set your NIC card to DHCP and see if you get an IP address thats routable to the internet (i.e not a private IP)

have you restarted the router? if so, then see if Belkin offers a firmware update. You will need to connect with a cable to do the update.

SOURCE: My Belkin N Router isnt broadcasting a wireless signal.

Reset the Router:
Step 1 Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the unit.
Step 2 With the unit powered on, press and hold the Reset button.
Step 3 Hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds.
Step 4 Release the Reset button.
Step 5 The unit will reboot. Allow 20-30 seconds before reconnecting.
Step 6 The device is now at factory defaults.
When it says hold for about 10 seconds, don't hold for more than ten seconds or the procedure will likely fail, if ten seconds doesn't work try 5 seconds

Try restoring the Belkin back to the factory default by powering up the Belkin and pressing the RESET button on the back of the Belkin for 7 secs. Then connect a LAN cable from the computer to the Belkin, open IE browser and type the configuration IP address and configure the wireless settings ie. SSID, encryption etc. The computer wireless cards will need to be configured with the Belkin wireless settings to allow them to communicate with the Belkin.

Belkin router signal not showing up for Wii or Laptop.

If no signal, check router config. Use your
internet browser to look at router's settings.
By default the password on most Belkin routers is left blank, and the default IP address is 192.168.2.1 Check all you router's wireless settings in case disabled or incorrect. Make sure the laptop's wifi button has been toggled to OFF. Routers do die - esp the lowend ones. New wireless G router = $20 on sale.

As long as the computer you are connecting has the capability to connect in some form, wireless or wired, you will not have to run the web utility again. However, if you are currently connecting your laptop wirelessly, and you are connecting your other computer with a wired connection, you must make sure that the wired network is not disabled.
