today i have remove item from the freezer and melted the frost and ice with a hair dryer.turned it back on,has been runing for bout 6 hours but the freezer still doesnt get low enough.

  • Juan Rodriguez Nov 30, 2012

i failed to mention that this past weekend i decided to move the fridge fwd and vacuum all lint buid up from the back bottom condensor/compressor area.after doing so i plugged it back in and it did not start up again even thoufgh the lights worked .i couldnt hear the fridge start up again. i had also poured warm/hot water on the back corner of the freezer comp to remove/thaw frost/ice build up.i notice a pan on the bottom of the refridgerator was filled with water and a drain was dripping water onto i think the drain is clear.i started to take apart a plastic channel about 6 inches wide and the depth of the fridge from the ceiling of the refridgerator.i saw what looked like a timer .i turned it ever so slightly and the fridge kicked on.should i have turned the timer switch a full turn ?did i do something wrong by unsyncronizing the defrost timer and the compressor?

No, the defrost timer will be OK. You will need to replace the "defrost thermostat" on the unit. Here is the part to order.

If the heater had continuity it is good. It has to be the defrost thermostat.

SOURCE: Viking freezer frost build-up

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

SOURCE: ice in the bottom of frigidaire side by side frost proof freezer

take all the bottom shelves and baskets out of the freezer. look at the back wall of the freezer. youll see a block of ice in a metal pan looking part at the bottom of the rear panel. there is a hole in the bottom of that pan. thats the defrost drain. its clogged. use a hair dryer to get all the ice out then use hot water to flush out the drain hole.

Your have a good idea re the defrost timer. But there is also a thermostat that turns the compressor back on when the temp hits a certain point during the defrost cycle and defeat the normal cycle.. Check that out.

Ice block

There is some cooling in the freezer which is allowing the temp to raise above freezing for a brief period. Check gaskets and or the temp setting. Is ice cream hard or soft. Ice cream freezes at around 15-18 degrees. My guess is that the door gasket is allowing air inside the box.

Frost is building up in bottom freezer. Appliance is running nonstop. I believe that the freezer drawer has been shut completely. Foods in refrigerator section are fine; foods in freezer section are...

Frost can build up for multiple reasons. Most common is the start os an iceblock. Other reasons can include condensation from door being left open or opening too much. It can also happen from backsplash from the inlet tube for the ice maker. If the fridge is running non stop. It sounds like the ice block is forming and the temps are not getting to the program temps. If at factory setting the freezer should be at or around 0 degrees and fridge should be between 42 and 48 degrees. Has the fridge shutdown at all to go into defrost? The defrost timer may have went out and is causing an iceblock. If there is an ice block always change bimetal/ defrost thermostat.

Water leaks inside

It's due to wrong temp setting and malfunction of defrost cycling. Keep thermostat setting at 5 degree or little less. And don't keep it in minus,as defrost cycle will take longer time. And also you will get less cooling in fridge compartment and also water leaks.Check drain line hose may freezed. And also freezer tray get blocked due to over frosting around freezer. Defrost manually by unplug your fridge and after defrost all ices, plug again and keep correct temp setting. Thanks.

Ice cream soft

Ice Cream is the hardest thing to freeze in a fridge /freezer unit , you need a least 0 deg F
to harden ice cream. If the ice cream was satisfactory before the repair and the stat is set to max. it is possible you have an over charger refrigeration circuit.

This is a simple question. What is the average

Not so simple actually. Depends for long lasting, deep freeze, meat ect you want 0 to -4 Farenheit. For Ice cream (non-defrosting) soft 20 to 24 degrees firm 15-19 degreees, hard same as meat. For defrosting models stick with the 0 to -4 as otherwise ice cream and other liquids will actually melt during the warmest part of the defrost cycle. I believe that is a self defrosting model so I'd stick to 0 degrees farenheit average.

My Kenmore Fridge (bottom freezer type) not freezing

Look for problems you can see. Check for frost on the back wall of the freezer, If you find frost on the back wall locate the defrost timer and rotate the clutch head screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one click. With the timer now in the defrost position you will hear sounds in the freezer compartment such as expansion, sizzling, after a few minutes. If after say 25-30 minutes the system does not return to cooling mode ( Compressor starting) rotate the timer again SLOWLY until you hear a second click. This would indicate a bad defrost timer. If you get no defrost your problem could be a defect in the heater circuit such as an open heater or defrost thermostat. Normal defrost time would be 18-22 minutes.
