I ended up trying the machine on a few different cycles all of which failed to complete. Finally tried a 'Drying' only cycle and it emptied out quite alot of water which was odd. It now seems fine. guessing it was a blockage and a certain amount of water was backed up in the machine??? any clarity welcome.

Not really a fix this but may get you going for a while.
We have a AEG 12710 update with what sounds like the same problem,If you remove the filter you can see the pump impellor and with the power off you can spin this a bit with a screwdriver etc and then box it back up and it should spring back to life for a few weeks. This is what we are having to do every few weeks until i get a new pump sorted.
Hope this helps
