Question about Maytag Neptune MDG5500AW Gas Dryer

1 Answer

Dryer stops heating and we hear squeaking noise

You had responded to an earlier inquiry that the gas coils needed to be replaced. I have the same problem, but I also hear squeaking noises just when the igniter starts to glow red. Would the faulty gas coils cause the noisel. We also got a smell of something burning, almost like rubber. Thanks.

They could cause the noise. Call a repairman, because whenever you are dealing with gas, there brings a whole host of other issues to the forefront.

You need to check the solinoids on the gas vale. They might work to start but after they heat up some they possibly could break down and shut off. There are 2 coils on the valve. When you first start the dryer you should head a distinctive loud click noise. that is the primary coil opening the valve. When that happens you should also see the glow bar lighting. after the bar lights you should hear one more loud click. Thats the heat sensor opening and allowing the other coil to open to allow gas to flow and ignite. If you do not hear the first click when you start the dryer, look in the back for a small white rectangular fuse with 2 small wires on it. (they may be blue in color) That is a thermal fuse. Use a ohm meter to check if it is pen. If it is replace it.If you heard the first click and the glow bar starts to light but nothing else happens, you eed to check the heat sensor. It is connected to the flame baffle at the end of the gas valve. It will have 2 wires on it. One white and one blue I belive. It is attached by 1 screw. ( 1/4") You will need to check that out with a meter also. If it checks good reinstall it. You will then want to ohm out both coils. Only one may be bad but I recomend you replace the both of them. You will also want to make sure that your vent is not clogged up. That too can cause the dryer to short cycle. Hope this will help you.

Upon starting you will hear a clicking noise which is the spark ignitor. If heard the two coils on the gas valve are the problem

Frigidaire crown gas dryer runs fine but after about 10 minutes it turns itself off and i cant turn it back on for about an hour

From the description you give the most likely cause of this problem are bad gas coils or a bad gas valve.

You say you see the flames for 10 minutes before it stops heating but you don't mention if the igniter is continuing to glow. One thing we need to know is if the igniter continues to cycle on and off when the dryer stops heating.

There is a small square plug on the front panel you can remove to try and visually check if the igniter is glowing.

The problem won't be the thermal fuse or one of the thermostats. Once the fuse is open the dryer won't heat but it won't start to heat after 20 minutes.

After the dryer runs ten minutes and stops heating then check if the igniter is still cycling on and off. This is important because if the igniter is working then the thermostats and igniter are okay.

When the igniter glows at some point you might hear a click and the igniter would stop glowing. The click is from the flame sensor and after the click and the voltage is removed from the igniter at the same instant the voltage is applied to the gas coils and you should get a flame.

You might hear a hum, buzz or vibration from the coils when this happens. If the coils seem to react to the voltage but there is no flame then most likely the gas valve is bad. If the coils don't do anything then most likely the coils are the problem. The gas valve and gas coils can work for 10-15 minutes and then heat up and stop working till everything cools down.

One other thing I must tell you about the gas coils. Here is a link to the gas coils you will need. These are the new style that will last quite a bit longer the the older one. The coils are like the spark plugs in your car. The will need replacing in time due to wear. Below is a video to walk you thru the repair process.

Hi,

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

Whirlpool model GGQ8858EQ1 gas dryer starts, gets flame and begins heating. then after a short while flame shuts off and i hear a chattering noise somewhere near the bottom of dryer. It lasts for about...

The problem is your gas valve solenoids (coils). There are usually two of them mounted on the burner assembly. One is the MAIN coil, the other is the SECONDARY coil. It is recommended that you replace BOTH of them at the same time. Replacements can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com. Just type in the model number you provided and look under the "Burner Assembly" section for items 13 and 14. I hope this helps you.

If this is a gas dryer, the rattling noise you hear is usually an indication of the gas valve coils failing on the burner assembly. Your dryer will normally have two of them. One is the main coil, and the other is a pilot position coil. It is recommended that you replace both of them at the same time (usually sold as a set). Searspartsdirect.com carries your parts. Just type in your model number and look under the "Burner Assembly" heading. For comparative shopping, repairclinic.com may also carry your parts. Sometimes at a cheaper price. If this is not a gas dryer, please post back with your model number, so I can assist you better. I hope this helps answer you questions.
