Question about Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router
Can I safely disconnect either my modem or unplug my router at night for security reasons, or will I experience network connection isses the next day? Will my ISP get mad and 'punish me' because they don't have visibility if I'm not connected? Sometimes renewing my IP address is complicatd, when it should be simple!!.
Disconnecting is your choice. No one will mind. Draw back is the possible loss of IP lease.
Go to Start > Search (Run in XP) and type cmd ENTER. In the command prompt type ipconfig /release ENTER. Then type ipconfig /renew ENTER. This just refreshes your IP. Test it.

SOURCE: laptop can not connect to router
If you care to try, manually enter IP settings in your laptop as follows:
IP Address - 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1
DNS - whatever your ISP is using
In your Internet Explorer >
Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN settings button, check "Automatically detect settings", OK, Advance tab, check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.

Reset your rourter, with a pin or a paper clip for 30 seconds and disconnect power and wait for 30 seconds and reconnect it back and check if the power light is lit up in your router first..if yes, connect the modem cable out to the wan port of your router, and check if the wan light is lit up in your router, if yes connect a lan cable from the number 1 lan port of the router to the desktop pc and check if the lan 1 light is light up if yes the router is working properly, then check for the ipaddress in your desktop..if not your router might have gone bad..if you have any doubts rever back..

Not sure if I understand properly but your router should have a WAN port or an "Internet" port
your modem should be connected to it and your PC should be on any of the LAN port
