Need some more info, so have a few questions: Has it connected OK in the past or are you just recently connecting it to your computer? What kind of computer are you using? What is the operating system the computer runs? Did the cable come with the unit? Does the cable work on anything else OK?

Did you follow the manual when you installed the HDD1630?

FYI, Here is the link to Philips support on the HDD1630, it has the manual, etc:
    http://www.usasupport.philips.com/produc...

You must verify this, but I saw the Quickstart guide talks about a free helpdesk. I don't know how good they are so don't beat me up if they are no good! but here it is:

I have the 30gb gogear mp3 player and while I was syncing it it malfunctioned...now my computer says it doe'snt recognize it and that it malfunctioned and it's screen shows that it is connected to the...

Connect your player to the pc that has the Philips device manager running, then reset the player by holding the off-switch and the volume-+ (plus) switch.
If it will still not start as it should, repeat the reset, and as soon as the player shuts off, press and hold the volume- - (minus) switch. The Philips device manager will recognize the player now, and recommend a repair, do so.

MY GOGEAR MP3 PLAYER IS NOT FORMETING

Run a Repair in the Philips Device Manager - it is your only hope. If a message comes up saying, "Failed to Repair Device," then this player is done. This is a legacy mp3 player that is ruined by connecting it to a computer that is running either Windows Vista or Windows Media Player 11. It was tied to a MusicMatch Jukebox service that was cancelled in October 2007. Philips is no longer issuing firmware upgrades for this player, and a firmware upgrade will not resolve your issue. Sorry.

Please connect to pc

Make sure you back up all songs on the GoGear before attempting this solution.

1) Back up all files on the GoGear
2) Open up Philips Device Manager (Start --> All Programs --> Philips)
3) Click on the Repair Tab, and look for a msg that says connect the player while holding the volume + button
4) Disconnect the GoGear from the computer and turn the GoGear off - hold in the volume + button and continue to hold it as you reconnect the GoGear to the computer; after holding the volume + button for up to 20 or 30 seconds, a window will open up saying that your device is being repaired (now you can let go of the volume + button); after the repair is successfully complete, your GoGear will be good as new

Now you can do the firmware upgrade that will prevent this problem from occuring in the future. Open up Philips Device Manager and click the Update tab. This problem was caused because most GoGear's were designed for Windows XP with Media Player 10 (which is no longer the latest standard).

Wont come back on!

What OS are you using?
I know that it is not fully compatible in Vista.
1) Try using an XP machine and plug it in there, in any case, reformat the MP3 player using FAT.

2) Try uninstalling all software for your MP3 player from your PC and reinstalling it.

3) Here is something else you might want to try:
Try doing a soft reset.
  1. Press and hold the Power On/Off key and the Volume + key for a couple of seconds.
  2. Then switch on the GoGear using the Power On/Off key.
This is soft reset, your songs will not be lost.

4) If all else fails, it's time for a factory reset:

  1. Connect the GoGear to the AC adapter and to your computer.
  2. Make sure all other applications such as Philips Plug-in, Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer that access the device are closed or else Device Manager will not recognize the device. Launch the Device Manager at Start->Programs->Philips Device Manager->Philips Device Manager on your PC.
  3. Select the REPAIR tab on the dialogue box and then click "Repair" to start repairing.

IMPORTANT: All music & content of your micro jukebox will be erased once the repair function completes. 051028091949_1746.gif 051028091949_1747.gif
  4. When repair is complete a dialogue box will pop up; click "OK" and unplug the GoGear from the computer. 051028091949_1748.gif
  5. Follow all the on-screen instructions to complete the repair.
  6. The Device Manager will close automatically once the success message is displayed. Close all opened applications and then unplug your GoGear.
  7. Once the GoGear is disconnected from the computer, the display will show “Firmware Upgrading” for a couple of seconds and then start up as usual.
Hope That Helps!

30GB

Perhaps you still have it in "hold" position.
Otherwise, reinstall the software or try to put music on by adding the folders direct into the Phillips with the explorer.
