Question about KitchenAid Superba Architect KSCS25INSS Side by Side Refrigerator

Ice Tray Freezes & ice builds up around internal workings of ice cube holder

Initially, our KSCS25INSS was delivered with a defective freezer door. The factory failed to install the inner working for the water and ice dispenser. The initial fix was to replace the door which was done. However since then, although the water dispenser works fine and the unit makes ice, the ice cube tray does not keep the ice cold enough so it "melts" just a bit so that all the cubes are stuck together making it impossible to get ice through the door. In fact the only way to get ice is by chipping cube free. In addition we have significant ice build upbetween the ice cube holder and the freezer door. The ice build up is so sever that every 2-3 weeks I have to melt and chip it way. We have had this issue looked at a few times, but not of the fixes have worked. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Check and make sure you door seal is tight. Take a dollar bill and place it between the door jam and gasket, close the door and then pull the bill slowly out. It should be rather tight all the way around. So you will have to do several checks all the way around the door. If you have a bad spot call and have them either replace the gasket or adjust the door. The other thing you can do (I have found most if not all manufacturers require this) empty your ice maker once a week. The problem comes from your refer being a self defrost. There is a heater coil that gets as hot as a range element to defrost the evap coil. It is the defrost cycle that causes the ice to melt down a bit. And the defrost cycles every 12 to 24 hours causing the cubes on top to melt down some. So as your bucket fills whatever was on top melts a bit and by the time you are ready to use several layers may be melted causing them to stick together.

Whirlpool French door not making ice, but can get water. I had the water valve replaced and it still does not make ice help

Okay, here's a bunch of info in the order I would troubleshoot since the one year warranty expired.

1) The water filter might be clogged. Try just removing it to see if it makes ice. If it does change the water filter.

2) The water inlet valve might (still) be defective. The water inlet valve is an electro-mechanical valve. The coil can show good for continuity and still not let the water thru although you didn't say if it worked when he left. if recently replaced it should be under his warranty.

3) The water pressure in the house might be too low. The water inlet valve which supplies water to the ice maker is designed to work with a minimum of 20 psi of water pressure.

4) The door switch might be defective. When the freezer door is opened the freezer door switch does two things, it turns on the light in the freezer and turns off the ice maker and dispenser. If the door switch fails the dispenser will not turn on. The switch can be checked for continuity with an Ohm meter. If it doesn't have continuity it should be replaced.
5) It could be that the ice maker assembly itself is defective. The freezer temp should be between 0-5 degrees for the ice maker to cycle properly. There are several components in the control module of the ice maker that can fail and most are not sold separately. Also, ice makers have a relatively short lifespan and so it might not be worth fixing. If other, simpler parts like the water inlet valve or shut off arm have been ruled out, and the only thing left is the ice maker itself, replace it as a unit. Not as expensive as you may think...Under $100

6) The icemaker module at the front might also be defective. The module has a motor that cycles the ice ejector arms around to push the ice cubes out when the ice maker thermostat closes. It also has contacts in it for the mold heater and water inlet valve. The motor or contacts of the module can fail. Usually there are test points in the module that a service person can use to determine if there is a problem with it or one of the related ice maker components.

7) The icemaker mold thermostat might be defective. Inside the control module of the ice maker is a thermostat which monitors the temperature of the ice mold (ice tray). Once the mold reaches the proper temperature the ice maker starts a harvest cycle by ejecting the ice cubes and refilling with water. If the mold thermostat is defective the ice maker doesn't advance. The thermostat can be checked for continuity. Replace it as needed. The freezer temp should be between 0-5 degrees for optimum performance.

Ice maker only crushing ice not making cubes something about reversing piston

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Use this manual to help you sort out the problem: (8.43 mb)
http://applianceassistant.com/pdf/inDoorIceSystem.pdf

Motor

The motor is now located on the freezer door

in a foamed-in-place enclosure under the "dispenser

bubble" area of the inner door panel.

The motor is mounted to a plastic mounting

bracket, which, in turn, is mounted to the enclosure

with four mounting screws.

The motor operates on 115 volts DC (115 volts

AC is delivered to the motor, where it is converted

within the motor assembly to DC). This

gives the motor a higher RPM than the earlier

dispenser motors, and results in a faster ice

delivery rate in both the cubed and crushed

modes.

Crushed ice is delivered by turning the motor

in a clockwise direction, and cubed ice is delivered

when the motor turns in a counterclockwise
direction.

See pages 36 - 40 (starts on printed page 5-12) for checking the motor and the switch pack.
This will deterime what has failed.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The ice dispenser won't dispense ice or water.

Your model should have an interlock switch built into the door frame that tells the refrigerator the freezer or fresh food door is open. Interlocks are to prevent dispensing of water or ice with the freezer door open and sometimes become defective. First unplug before looking at or handling any electrical parts. Next I want you to remove the kickplate at base of refrigerator and test the plug connection that goes into freezer door and connects behind kickplate. Water or loose wiring will cause the same problem by not completeing the electrical signal to the motherboard. I would like to place the Service Manual here but Whirlpool will not allow me to place their manuals here for the entire public to copy or reproduce but I can send more information to you upon your request=> HERE without charge. Just request the KSCS25INSS00 Service Manual and I will be glad to send and assist you, Thanks, Sea Breeze

THE ICE MAKER IS NOT MAKING ICE.

Once again, good day.
There are many reasons an ice maker fails to produce.
First it is important that the freezer is at it's normal temperature because the ice maker, by design will lock out when the freezer goes above approx. 10 degrees. Just follow the instructions.
It wil get you there.

First step is to take a small paper cup of water and fill the cavity until it is near full. With the ice maker turned on, close freezer door and wait 3 hours to see if it harvests. If not, the ice maker is bad, and must be replaced. If the cubes harvest then.......
Three possibilities.
1. The water supply from the house is not delivering water to the water valve. Shut off the house at the meter, disconnect the line going to the water valve, and with the line pointed into a bucket, have someone turn the valve back on for a 15 second count. The water should come out smartly. If not, the line and it's fittings will have to be replaced.
2. The fill tube from the back of the machine that feeds water into the back of the ice maker is frozen up. You will have to remove the ice maker to visually inspect that tube. If blocked, it needs to be defrosted, but use caution. Too much heat too fast will start to melt plastic and vinyl parts you don't want melted.
If this is the case, then once cleaned out, you will have to change the water valve located in the back bottom rear of the machine because it is leaking during the off cycle.
3. If everything checks O.K. up to this point, you will have to purchase and install a new water valve, and install it.
P.S. Under very rare occasions the electric circuity in the ice maker will fail to send a signal to the water valve. Although rare, it can happen, in which case the best option is to replace the ice maker and water valve.

Water works fine, but ice maker doesn't work at all

possible problem. control board circuit panel on each side of freezer compartment. If it becomes defective, it believes that there is ice in the container or the door is open and will not allow the ice maker to continue it's cycle. $45.00 plus shipping on ebay. Brand new. Easy to install. Comes in pairs. Can be tested with an insulated wire but not sure which holes to connect. It is 110 volt so be careful. The electrical coupling on the right side of the freezer is the one that you test. If it is the circuit control board that is bad, the icemaker will start it's cycle as soon as you connect (2) of the holes with the insulated wire. I called out a repair company. They tested the control boards and found they were bad. Wanted $215.00 for something that I could get on EBay for $45.00 plus shipping of $8.00.

We can't get water to the ice maker on our Kitchaid side-by-side. The water dispenser works properly.

Good day,
The best way to get the ice maker up and running, is to follow a step by step procedure. It is important the freezer be at it's normal temperature. Any temperature above 15 degrees will cause the ice maker to lock out on it's internal thermostat.
As well, you can skip the test on whether your water supply from the house is O.K. if the water in the door is working properly.
First step is to take a small paper cup of water and fill the cavity until it is near full. With the ice maker turned on, close freezer door and wait 3 hours to see if it harvests. If not, the ice maker is bad, and must be replaced. If the cubes harvest then.......

ICEMAKER HAS NO WATER IN IT AND ICE STRIPPER NOT MOVING BUT WATER DISPENSER WORKS KITCHENAID SUPERBA MODEL #KSCS23INBL00 SIDE BY SIDE WITH ICE AND WATER DISPENSER IN DOOR

First check to make sure the icemaker is on. Most icemakers have what looks like a wire that extends to the right. Down is on, up is off. If yours does not have this, there might be an on off switch on the icemaker itself. If the wire (bale) is on, or the switch is on, then the icemaker is defective, unless the freezer is too warm. Icemakers have a thermostat in them that will not let them operate if the freezer is too warm. Sometimes that thermostat will not activate until the freezer is 15 degrees.

Bad water & ice cube taste

Hello redwood City
Welcome

You said,
Your Kitchenaid Superba KSRG25FKBL15 has bad tasting water and ice cubes. You replaced the copper tubing which delivers the water to the fridge and that didn't help. You replaced the copper tubing again with plastic tubing...no better. Any suggestions? Your tap water doesn't taste this bad.You bought a Kenmore french door fridge with water dispenser in the door in July 2008. The fridge has a filter. A few weeks after the fridge came the water and ice started tasting really bad, unlike any bad water taste I have ever tasted. And your tap water is fine. The bad taste appears to be random. Sometimes you get a cup full of nasty water and sometimes it tastes fine.

First you must know you have a 1 year warranty and can have them come out to fix anything, no charge. If it persists. You will have to get tough and you , MUST INSIST THEY REPLACE YOUR FRIDGE

When installing the water line these were a part of the directions!
Did you do this before connecting the water line to your fridge?
"Place the free end of the tubing in a container or sink, and
turn ON the main water supply. Flush the tubing until water is
clear. Turn OFF the shutoff valve on the water pipe. Coil the
copper tubing."

Whirlpool remedy
Off-taste, odor or gray color in the ice
1.Are the plumbing connections new, causing discolored or
off-flavored ice? Discard the first few batches of ice.
2.Have the ice cubes been stored too long? Throw old ice
away and make a new supply.
3.Does the freezer and ice storage bin need to be cleaned?
See “Cleaning” or “Ice Maker and Storage Bin.”
4.Has food in the freezer or refrigerator been wrapped
properly? Use airtight, moisture-proof packaging to help
prevent odor transfer to stored food.
5.Does the water contain minerals (such as sulfur)? A filter
may need to be installed to remove the minerals.
6. Is there a water filter installed on the refrigerator? Gray or
dark discoloration in ice indicates that the water filtration
system needs additional flushing. Run additional water
through the water dispenser to flush the water filtration
system more thoroughly (at least 2 to 3 gal. [8 to 12 L] or 6 to
7 minutes initially). Discard discolored ice.

Let me know what works,
Thank You ,
HUUUM!!
