Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Gfi outlet trips right before the final spin cycle. This is on a top load kenmore 80 series washer. I replaced the timer but the problem still exists. The timer seems to be in a pause mode. In other words, the motor is not yet under power. Any ideas here?

murray, Thankyou for the suggestion. let me first add that this is a new problem. the washer has run fine on this gfi circuit for a few years, until now. also, the timer is in pause mode with no power to the motor. I just thought of a possible problem though. Im now thinking I need to check the lid switch. Maybe a shirt circuit there. It does make sense now, The timer is about at the mode that switches the circuit that has to be closed before the spin cycle actually begins. Thanks for the help. I will certainly look forward to additional input.

Motor driven appliances can trip GFI outlets when there is no problem at all with the appliance. When a large motor first starts, it draws more current for a short time and some GFI outlets will trip (others may not).

Are GFI outlets required by code in your state/county for washing machines? If not, replace the GFI with a standard outlet. If so, replace GFI with a higher quality GFI outlet.

It appears your timer/main controller/CCU has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question!!!!!

Kenmore series 80 washer won't drain after wash cycle

Try the 'drain' portion of a few of the other cycles (heavy, perm. press, delicates) and see if it will drain/spin there. You can also try advancing the timer slowly through the 'spin' portion to see if it kicks in anywhere.

If it will rinse and spin in the other cycles, you most likely have a bad timer.

Hope this helps.

Something in the timer came apart. Timer needs replaced. When in good working order, the timer should ONLY ever be turned clockwise..Reversing this could break it.

Kenmore 80 series washer doesn't stop filling up with water

Almost went and bought a switch until I widened by search for "kenmore washer 80 series overflow" and came up with this:

Turns out that a couple weeks ago, I had a really unbalanced load that probably shook off the tubing. Anyhow, saved me a trip to the supply store AND cost. Thanks to the original poster!

Kenmore washer series 80, Clothes still soapy

If you are getting no water spray during the rinse cycle that would cause the soapy clothes issue.

Are you getting cold water during the wash/rinse cycles? If you have the machine set to warm/warm you may only be getting hot water while the final spin is calling for cold.

If you have cold water available then the timer is not calling for the water spray. The problem is either in the mixing valve or the timer.
